Tungsten Vs rose gold

DJA, on August 2, 2016 at 10:09 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

I'd like to hear some opinions on tungsten for a men's wedding band. How does it hold up over time? FH is unsure between this or rose gold. Just wondering if anyone has any personal experience or knowledge!

FH was set on a tungsten wedding ring (he fell in love when he was picking out my e-ring). We went back to take a first look at bands, and after doing some research, he decided to go with a precious metal. The woman helping us let us know that you can't change anything about a tungsten band. It can't be resized or engraved. Also, you can take a hammer to it, tap it a couple times, and it will shatter. We hike and camp a lot, so FH is worried about it hitting something if we are climbing and having it shatter. Because of this information, he decided it wasn't worth the risk. Hope this helps!

My husband has a tungsten wedding ring and he loves it. We've only been married for 7 months but he's had it for 4 years when we first thought we were getting married and then changed our date to save more money. He's been wearing it since way back then and it's still good as new.

From what I've heard jewelers say, rose gold is even softer than yellow gold. They recommended we steer clear of that for something worn as constantly as a wedding band. Sad!

FH chose a tungsten band based on how durable it is. We went to a few different jewelers, and they told us this tends to be the ring of choice for men who work their hands a lot (landscapers, construction, etc).

The one downside is that they can't be sized; they must be ordered in the size needed, and if FH gains or loses weight, the ring will need to be replaced. We went with a jeweler and ring company that offer life time replacement if anything happens to the ring or if he needs a new size.

My wedding band is rose gold and so we wanted to incorporate that into my FH'S band, but he wanted a Tungsten band. We found a jewelery collection where the inside of his Tungsten ring is rose gold...just a thought.

FH is going with a fairly simple white gold. He wasn't fond of not being able to resize, and he wants it to look similar to my ring. If we had the money he probably would have gone with platinum.

FH really likes the look of tungsten, but after finding out they can't be sized or polished/refinished we decided against it. They are less expensive than a precious metal but seems like they would have to be replaced several times over the years.

If anyone has any other suggestions for unique materials for men's bands I'd be open to them Smiley smile

We bought my FH a tungsten ring on amazon for 19 bucks. He loves it! I have heard that tungsten does shatter if smashed, but we don't anticipate him smashing his ring with a hammer.

FH chose tungsten because his job is dangerous enough that he wanted a ring that would shatter before it hurt his finger if it ever came to that. Tungsten fit that bill.

For something that looks like platinum, I'd go with sterling silver rather than white gold that seems to need to be re-dipped once or twice a year (and probably more frequently for a man). Sterling won't tarnish if worn all the time.

Rose gold is actually more durable than yellow gold because it has more copper in the mix.

My FH has a "man-gagement" tungsten ring. He wanted something to wear while we are engaged. He loves that thing, and I was SHOCKED by how inexpensive it is. And like @Matt said, it's definitely not cheap looking. We ordered off of Amazon and it is beautiful. Shiny and durable, and very heavy. Noticeably heavier than titanium or gold. If you get a chance to compare, hold a gold ring in one hand and a tungsten in the other. The difference in weight is easy to detect. If you think that would bug your FH, I'd look at other metals.

Because the wedding ring has serious sentimental value, I'd go with the metal (gold) that can be resized over his lifetime, rather than one that would need to be totally replaced when he gains/loses weight, knuckles swell with age, etc. My FH is interested in titanium because of the durability, but I'm dead set against it because it would need replacing within a few decades.
