Tungsten Vs 14k Gold

vicksss, on July 1, 2017 at 12:32 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 41

Hi! My FH and I are shopping for his wedding ring. I've read that lately a lot of people decided to buy tungsten instead of gold. Tungsten rings are cheaper than gold and FH is leaning toward the cheaper one bc he's saying that its unnecessary to spend the additional money for something that looks similar and that he doesn't care about the type of metal. He's saying all that maters is the symbolism. While I think that's cute and all, since thankfully money is not really an issue for us I'd rather invest in something that will keep its value in the long run and can be maybe passed down. What do you guys think? Pros and cons??

My FH wants tungsten. He said "I want it so I can open my beer bottles like a badass." LMAO, I dunno where I found this nerd! Dude rings aren't passed down in my family because, gold or not, they're just not worth much.

I got FH what he really wanted. He preferred the tungsten over a traditional gold ring. It's a very sturdy metal, it doesn't scratch easily and doesn't warp with wear luke gold does. It's black, which was what he preferred anyway. And I was able to customize it in a way that I could not with a gold ring.

I'm also planning on getting him a nicer/fancier ring just in case he wants to dress it up a little, but he is very excited about the one I already got him.

Lol Sarah that's so cute. My FH is a secret nerd too. Something about them nerds huh? Haha.

I read that if you accidentally drop the tungsten ring, it can literally break in half and it can't be fixed

Well, FH will have two already since I got him a Qalo for his daily stuff (he's a PE teacher and a firefighter, so he uses his hands a lot) so really he may end up with 3 rings haha!

It's true, tungsten can shatter, or he could lose a gold one at the beach (and you would be out a whole lot more money) but any kind of disaster can happen to any piece of jewelry - they aren't indestructible and are very replaceable.

I'm getting him gold so it can be sized later if needed.

We were concerned about sizing, but we learned that most retail places which have the "warranty" programs will actually order a whole new ring in place of the one that doesn't fit, since alternative metals can't be sized.

FH got a tungsten ring for way cheaper due to his work he can't wear it at work so he will have a rubber wedding ring. So being the cheap man he is he found one for like 40 dollars and he loves it.

I just had this conversation with our jeweler. She said that they're finding tungsten does more harm than good. I guess it's designed to shatter if it gets caught on something so it doesn't hurt your finger, but it ends up hurting it anyway.

    I'm all for gold.

My FH works outside and with his hands, so tungsten was always his only option!

My FH went with tungsten since he's not a ring person and just got it in a silver type band so it's not the average black. It's cheaper and more durable plus he has trouble with nickel so he didn't want to chance it with other metals!

My FH isn't too picky, but I decided to pick him out a white gold band (which hopefully he will pick out today!) Just because he has really bad allergies to most metals other than gold and some silver. I'm so excited to get it today!

Fh is getting a white and yellow gold band to match my e-ring. He keeps joking around about the most ridiculous things that could be his ring, that could never really be a ring.....mostly to make me laugh. For example, we were eating onion rings, and there was a very small one, he put it on his finger and said "this could be my ring, it would last a day or two and then I can get more. I'll have lunch and a ring."

We picked out a white gold band for him. We looked at alternative metals, but they can't be sized and we heard about them breaking as well. It's also what FH wanted, he liked the white gold look better than the alternative metal ones we were looking at.

FH wanted tungsten due to him working in the construction industry. We ordered his the same time as my E-ring. He actually got 2 rings.. One for work and one for wearing out. He said... You get 2 rings so he should be able to have 2 also. This is his actual wedding band though.

I talked DH into a white gold ring instead of tungsten. I know, I know, his ring, his choice. But there's a symbolism to that ring and if he gains or loses weight, he'll have to replace his wedding band if it's tungsten since it can't be sized. It's not the money, it's the idea of replacing a wedding band simply because your body changes that bothers me. We found an 18k white gold band at Kohls that he liked for around $400. After 3 months, it has some scratches, just like my band does. It's a sign that he wears it, even when he's working in the brick yards. Worth the investment!

@smox DH can have his gold band buffed if he ever gets a bad scratch! If it's white gold, you can have the rhodium plating redone too if he wants the shine back

FH wants a titanium with rosewood inlay ring. My ring will be gold to match my engagement ring.

I want him him to get what he wants and feels comfortable in. He found exactly what he wants on Amazon for less than $20. He also informed me that he will be ordering 2 since it's so cheap and he figures he might lose one.

Side-story: My dad did get a nice gold one when he and Mom married. Somehow he lost it (he works in construction so he would take it off to prevent injury) so they bought a replacement. Over the years, he lost that one so they again replaced it. Not surprisingly, he managed to lose that one also. He now has a tattooed wedding.

Moral of the story: get what works for your guy and your situation.

I've been told that tungsten cannot be sized or altered in any way. If you buy a tungsten ring be damn sure it fits and that you never plan to need to change or fix it. I'd expect to have to replace the ring at some point, lots of people's fingers get bigger as they age, and jewelry offer needs repair. We were going to do tungsten, but went with white gold because of this.
