Tungsten Carbide Wedding Band

Megan, on May 27, 2016 at 12:48 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

How do I know if the tungsten carbide wedding band I'm buying is good quality or not? I want something that will last forever (like my marriage will) I see tungsten carbide rings on Amazon for like $10 but I don't know about the quality of those....

I bought FH's tungsten band at a jewelry store and it was $350

ETA: I kind of feel like I needed to spend a decent amount on his band. He went out of his way and dropped a lot of money on my ring. The least I could do is spend a couple hundred on his and get any sort of warranty available for it.

We looked at Tungsten rings, but I learned from another poster here on WW that because they are so very hard and can't bend, they are known to shatter! I did some research, and it's true. In the end, we went with gold.

I think jewelry stores mark up their prices, which is understandable because they have to pay employees and rent, etc. But I saw a tungsten carbide w/fiber inlay at a jewelry store for $140, and the same exact ring on overstock.com for $16. I don't think it's considered a "precious" metal so that's why it's not expensive, but I still have reservations about spending so little. Maybe it's society's influence on me, but the price difference like that kind of sets off red flags instinctively.

I totally agree with you Pushing buttons! I feel like if it's so cheap surely there's something wrong with it....

Tungsten rings and rings made of other non-precious metals are supposed to have some heft to them. The cheaper ones from Overstock and Amazon are usually very lightweight and makes me question their durability, which is why I returned one I bought and went for one from a big box store. I figured I should pay for quality for a ring he's supposed to wear for the rest of his life (or until he loses it).

I agree, Keri. FH's ring is pretty heavy. And if it does shatter (I can't even imagine something this doing so), it means the ring likely saved his finger, rather than helped to pinch or rip it off. If it is due to defect, it is under warranty and will be replaced. I just can't help but feel a $10 ring will be suspect.

My husband has a tungsten carbide ring. We bought it off Ebay, think it was around $40. Glad we went with tungsten carbide because it did shatter when he was at work one day so he's on ring #2.

We are getting FH's ring from Amazon. You need to pay attention to the metal specs. Make sure it specifies Tungsten Carbide not just Tungsten or Tungsten Steel. Also, a lot of the super cheap ones use nickel as a binder. This can affect the shatter capability so be careful. When you get the ring, as pp stated, it should feel heavy. Tungsten is heavier than gold or platinum as a reference. A lot of jewelry stores and manufacturers of those rings guarantee the ring for life, increasing it's selling cost. Many will replace the ring free of charge or for a low fee if/when the ring shatters.

I bought one for my fiancé and he hated it. It felt like plastic. I initially ordered it from Overstock. I wouldn't suggest it. I returned it and bought a matte black stainless steel one from Zales.

FH and I were looking at tungsten but ended up going with white gold! We didn't like the idea that they can break and that you can't resize tungsten bands!

What's a good weight for a tungsten carbide ring?
