Trying to maximize space in a "unique" venue...

Ann, on August 1, 2018 at 11:16 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8

I am still in the process of finding a venue. My favorite option has a 160 person capacity for our 150 person guest list HOWEVER, there is one issue - there are three sets of columns that would block the view for 6 tables of 8. I left a message with the coordinator to find out how "limited" this view is, but before I talk to her again, I'm looking for opinions and advice:

How much of an issue is it that some tables cannot see the head table and/or dance floor? Is there one or the other that is crucial to being visible to all guests? (example: everyone needs to be able to see the head table, but not necessarily the dance floor).

Does anyone know if there table shapes that are more space efficient? (for example, can more rectangle tables fit in a space rather than rounds?) I am wondering if I can fit more tables into the middle of the room by picking another shape.

The coordinator did mention that we may be able to reduce the size of the dance floor to fit more tables. I want to ask her if we can keep the size of the dance floor, but move tables. If your guest table was moved (not broken down, but moved off the dance floor), would this be an issue? I'm imagining that people want a "home base" to sit and keep their stuff, but will be OK moving to a limited view area once they are dancing, mingling, going to the bar, etc.

Any other ideas to maximize space? Maybe increasing the number of people at the head table to reduce the number of guest tables? (can I add parents to the head table? SO's of the bridal party?) Trying to get creative before I give up on this one, as it is in my budget....

No idea if they would even work but have you seen the S tables? I think they're pretty cool and maybe you could form them around the columns? Most rental places have them!

Oo, I didn't even know those existed. I'm not sure if they would work, but I'll check them out!

You can do a mix of tables. Round tables do take up a little more space. We are looking at abt 130-150 ppl & our venue fits 175 w/o the dancefloor & 150 w/..so we did a mix to make more room. We do have 4 long tables of 18 & the round tables all have 8. As for the table being moved I honestly think it depends bc I know ppl who are dancing all night, but you can catch me on the dance floor for maybe 6 songs so I like to have a seat lol

That's another good idea on mixing up the tables!

Would you still be irritated if your table was shifted 10 ft, but not taken away (everyone would still have a seat)? I know that I personally wouldn't like the idea of my table being removed, but I'm not sure how I would feel if it got shifted. (It's OK if that would still bother you - I want honest feedback! I just want to clarify no one would lose their table)

It wouldn’t bother me to have my table shifted, but I’d be nervous that that would cut down on the space between tables and it would be harder for people to get out.

I would just figure out how to place the tables without having to move them around later. A mix of tables is perfectly fine, as is seating BP SO's at the head table (that's actually very considerate so the SO isn't alone most of the night). I also don't know how big of a deal it is to be able to see everything from the tables. Even if you have a clear line of sight, sometimes you're too far back to really see. There's always the option for people to get up and stand closer but off to the side if they want.

I do not like the idea of the tables being removed or shifted. I also don't think its fair that some people are not going to be able to see everything. I went to a wedding last year where the tables were split and we had brick columns in front of us. We couldn't see the bride and groom and also could not see the dance floor. I hated it and we ended up leaving early as we could see nothing.

I wouldn't move or shift the tables. I would switch to rectangles tables and maybe move the placement of the dance floor if you can?
