Trying to decide a wedding date based on better weather vs. best friend attendance

Elise, on August 23, 2019 at 5:50 PM Posted in Planning 1 19

Hi!

We are planning our wedding on the North Shore of Boston and we've found a venue we love. I'm English so many of my friends and family will be traveling over. One of my close friends is a teacher in the UK, and would only be able to come if it's during her "half-term" which is basically October break. We were leaning towards October 22nd, because she'd be able to come then. The venue has a barn, where the reception would be, and we're also happy with it as a rain option in case we can't do anything outside. However, I'd really like to do the ceremony and cocktail hour outside - the venue has beautiful outdoor areas and the foliage is going to gorgeous around that time of year. The cocktail hour could be in a tent though, which if necessary could be walls down/heated. The ceremony would be short, less than 20minutes. We don't mind asking people to bring a jacket for the ceremony but we don't want people to be frigid. If it's freezing we could do the ceremony inside the barn or in the tent.

Looking at the average temperatures for October 22nd in this region, you're looking at highs of 55-60'F. Whereas if we did it end of September/beginning of October, you have highs of 60-65'F. We'd have a higher chance of being able to do more outside if we chose an earlier date. But equally, it could randomly be 55'F end of Sep/beginning of October because it's New England and weather is unpredictable.

I'm stuck between choosing an earlier date and having a higher chance of the wedding being how I would ideally envision it with (even though I know it's not guaranteed), but knowing that my friend is not going to be able to come, versus having it later in October, having her there (although there's no guarantee she'll definitely be able to come, it's not going to be cheap for her to come over and I know life happens), but perhaps there being a bigger chance that we'll have to do more things inside.

What would you do?

To me there's not much difference in those temperature ranges. Just make sure your guests know you are having some events outside, plan for blankets and heaters, and you will be fine!

Yeah that's a really good point. Looking at past years, there were some days as low as 48' later around October 22, and if that happened we would probably have to go inside, but that's sort of the same as if it rained.

You can look at the average temperatures all you want, but you can never predict the weather. People generally will dress appropriately for the weather no matter when it is. If your friend means this much to you, I would go with the later date so she can come.

I would prioritize my friends over the weather in a heartbeat.

The 22nd for sure. I think your friend is more important than the weather. Also, that's my birthday, so I think it's a great day! 😂

Likes other have stated, I would go based on friends vs weather. I live in New England too and weather is always tricky. I would just maybe advise your UK guests to bring layers as the end of October is usually rather chilly/cold.

I'd say the weather/your envinsionment 100%. If she is a teacher, she CAN use PTO and have a Sub for the few days she's gone if she really wanted to be there. A huge part of your wedding can't be changed for one person..if she really won't make it then thats on her not you and maybe she can video chat during the ceremony?

It's hard def. but thats just my opinion of course this depends specifically on the weather difference and stuff and her reasoning as to why she couldn't make it work during the school year? But goodluck! Smiley heart

Have you talked with her about her attendance? I bet she would come. This is a hard one. The only people we discussed our “date” with before booking was my brother. He’s super busy and traveling all the time. I knew everyone else would go if they could and I had to let that go. The weather will always be a wild cars you can never plan around. I’ve seen many beautiful photos of weddings with tents.

I’d say your friend. The weather is always unpredictable anyway and I’m sure means more to you than the uncertainty of how the weather will be.

Unfortunately in england it works differently, you don't really get PTO you have to write a letter to the governors to get time off and they really only allow for a parent or child's wedding. And she would have to take off multiple days to fly over

Yes, and obviously she was like "don't feel like you need to plan your date around me" but was excited that I was considering during her october break and said her and her wife would definitely be up for spending their break in Boston. I think only in extreme circumstances would she not make it

Oh dang. Good to know! Then just deciding how different it would be for guests comfort and your vision, definately try to make it work for both options! A happy medium

I say do what makes you most happy!! We are also having a destination in Fall and my FH’s sister is a teacher. She wanted us to do it during her break, but we had already decided to do it on our 4 year anniversary- both for sentimental reasons and because it would be when the temperature and foliage would be at its peak. Although it would be nice for his sister to be there, the dates she was available just didn’t fit my vision of the wedding. So we are having the wedding on the date we prefer. Your wedding is YOUR day- you should plan what is best for you and your spouse. It’s up to your guests to make it work for their schedules, not vice versa.

I live in Western Mass, and as you’ve stated, weather is very unpredictable... always in general, but especially here! We’ve had late October days where we are freezing cold and others where we are in tees and sweating. You’re not guarantee to have better weather if you chose an earlier date, just like you’re not guaranteed bad weather if you choose later. If that’s your only reason for choosing an earlier date, then I would go for having your friend there. In the long run, what will you remember more? The weather temp, or having your nearest and dearest there with you? People will dress accordingly, and you can even serve cocoa or hot cider during the ceremony if the weather is cold, and/or provide blankets for people to snuggle with. You’re also more likely to have better foliage for photos in later October, trees are usually still green here throughout September. I googled the weather from the last few years on our date (10/11) and in the past few years it varied between a high of 55 to a high of 85. But of course, go with what feels right for you!

There is a strong difference in frequency of rain, and windiness, starting after the first week of October. By the 22 every 3-4 years half the leaves on the North Shore are on the ground from rainstorms. I would go for earlier given a choice. Blustery wind is more common later even on sunny days, chill, and not as pleasant in a tent.
