Trying on a sample size that’s too small?

Rachel, on November 20, 2020 at 5:25 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 9
Hi, everyone!

As I posted about last night, I’m gearing up to go to a Hayley Paige trunk show here in my hometown this Sunday. I’m really excited, but also nervous because according to the salon, all of the sample gowns will only be a bridal size 10... I took a look at the HP size chart and according to that, the waist size for a HP bridal 10 is a 28 - yikes! I’m normally between a 30-31” waist and I wear a street size 10, so I know that these gowns will be too small for me. I’m not overweight by any means, I’m 5’8 and fluctuate between 150-155 pounds with an athletic/curvy build. My two favorite gowns that I want to try on the most from this collection are fit to flare style and I just worry that I won’t even be able to get the gown up past my hips and it’ll take away from the fun of the experience if I don’t fit in any of the gowns I love. Has anyone else tried on a sample size at an appointment that was too small but loved the gown anyways? I know the consultants will likely be able to assist the best they can with making the gown fit as “normal” as possible, but would still love to hear about anyone else’s experiences!

I did not try on any Hayley Paige dresses, but you'd be surprised how forgiving a lot of the dresses are. I am almost your exact size - I'm normally a 10 w/a 30 waist, am currently a 12 (thanks COVID), but tried on many 8s and I think even a 6. Just get your shimmy on - it works! Smiley laugh Some of the fabrics do have a stretch, plus over time the samples get stretched out so may no longer represent the true size. Even if the back can't zip up, you still get a great idea how it looks on your body. Take lots of photos if the salon allows it - seeing how I photographed in each dress really helped me!

Thank you so much!! I’m hoping that’s the case for these gowns, I just want to get a good idea of how they look even if they can’t fit 100% like my correct size. I really, really hope I have some good luck! 🤗🤗🤗 the fact that the gowns are most likely stretched out will help a lot, too!

Don’t get discouraged! I haven’t tried on that specific dress but as the PP. said a lot of gowns are very forgiving. There are so many options of shape wear that will squeeze in that last little bit!

I agree with previous posters. I wouldn't worry too much, you may be surprised to see they don't fit on you as small as you thought.

I'm about the same size as you as well and tried on a couple of 10s when I was looking for my gown and it was fine other than the zipper, which they are usually prepared for and can clip the back so you can still get a feel of how it looks. You should be fine!

I'm a bit smaller (usually a street size 6) but I think if I was 3" taller I'd probably have similar measurement, size, and shape to you. I didn't run into the issue of trying on samples too small but I don't imagine a few inches in the waist being a deal breaker for you being able to get into the gowns and get an idea of how they would look on you. I think you should go anyway!

Also sample gowns tend to stretch out because they get put on and taken off so many times, so it's possible the sample size 10 will fit more like a street size 10 than the measurements chart shows. I feel like most bridal sizes run 1-2 sizes smaller than street sizes, and I hear that sample gowns can stretch up to a full 1-2 sizes (depending on fabric, style, and how much the gown has been tried on), so a well used sample might be a perfect fit for you.

You're close enough to the sample size that you'll be fine - a lot of sample gowns stretch out as well 🙂

You might be surprised in that it might fit you better than you think! But like previous posters said, they have all sorts of clips and pins so that it looks just right when trying it on, even if small. Good luck and enjoy!!!
