Tree Unity Ceremony Advice

FutureMrs.Larson, on May 31, 2017 at 9:48 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

My FH and I want to do a tree planting ceremony for our unity ceremony. However, we can not plant the tree. It will need to be in a pot and we will add some dirt during the ceremony. Anyone have suggestions on a type of tree we should look for? We need something small and can live in a pot, as well as something that is not easy to kill because I do not have a green thumb. I look forward to your suggestions!

Maybe a dwarf fruit tree?? Something that will produce the fruits of your labor if you will.

Look for something with a shallow root system and no large "tap roots" for easy maintenance and potential transfer. We are doing a tree planting with a tree in the pot and are using a dogwood tree.

I recommend watering the potted tree or a potted orchid instead of adding dirt -- much less messy.

I don't recommend ficus trees -- they are very persnickety about changes in lighting (moving indoors to outdoors or vice-versa) and even drafts.

We have a HUGE Norfolk Island Pine tree in our front yard that started out as a 12" tall potted Christmas tree! So, I don't really recommend NIPs either.

Thanks for the suggestion @Nancy T! We have been going back and forth on adding dirt or watering. Maybe we will just stick with watering.

@Addison, can I ask were you got your dogwood tree from?

There is a legend about the dogwood tree, if you're having a religious ceremony.

We are getting a small tree (already in a planted pot) and putting dirt in mason jars and pouring it in (a lot is for show- there will already be dirt in there) and watering

We got our dogwood from a local nursery! It was pretty inexpensive and we've just been watering it in our backyard.
