Tree Planting Ceremony

Emily, on March 1, 2020 at 4:56 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 4

My FH and I have decided to include a tree planting ceremony. I am having the hardest time trying to think of a tree to plant! He isn't really into any plants and I know only enough to know our planting zone (zone 8) but we'd still like to nurture a plant to symbolize our marriage. What tree should I choose?! If you did this ceremony, how did you decide on your tree? I'd love something that smells good and isn't your "typical tree", like an oak or a maple. Looking for suggestions on what to research.

Where will you be planting it once you're ready for it to be moved outside? How big do you want it to get? Will it need sun, shade or a mix? What type of soil will it be living in? How much water will it need and will it be getting enough when you plant it? Do you want a flowering tree?

I love flowering trees but FH doesn’t think flowering trees are trees lol. He wants something tree like. The tree will be planted in mostly sun. Something that doesn’t need to be babied but I’m willing to go out and fertilize/water it if needed once it’s planted in the ground. There are 2 options for where it will live permanently. The first most likely place is the ceremony location at my moms. She’s got mostly sandy soil. If it comes with us to our house then we have a mixture of red clay and dirt. I know, really different soil. Not something super big but maybe a max of 15 feet? My mom has TONS of room on her property but us not so much.

I think we’re going to do this too! I’m leaning towards something smaller like a Bonsai tree that we can keep in a pot for a little while. I feel weird planting it at my current house knowing that won’t be our forever home. I don’t want to leave something symbolic like that behind!

What trees thrive where is so location-specific. I would call a local nursery and ask their advice. They are the best resource for a tree that will be happy in its new home.
