Traveling with your Wedding Gown?

Ananda, on April 21, 2017 at 6:35 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

Hello fellow brides, I'm getting married in Mexico, this coming September. As you can imagine, I'm nervous about traveling with my Gown. I've done some research, and everyone is ADAMANT about carrying my dress with me on the plane. I'm looking for a good quality garment bag for my dress. Any suggestions? Also, any suggestions on the best way to pack my dress?

This depends a lot on the airline and the size of the dress; we put my dress {fit and flare with a somewhat intense skirt} in a suitcase in cargo as per the dress shop's instructions, then dropped it off at with a dry cleaner for steaming and pressing.

I ordered a dress bag from amazon that is waterproof and put the bag from the dress shop inside that bag for extra protection and have already flown once with it, and still need to carry it to the wedding in a few months. I feel more comfortable with the double bag protection.

I worked for an airline and it depends on the flight attendants bc they may NOT help store dress on the plane. Usually anything so large will need an extra seat, stuffed in the FA closet if they let you, or get checked.

From experience if having to deny many dresses on planes through American Airlines is why I'm driving lol

Congrats! How exciting to have your wedding in Mexico! I don't know about bags but, the airplane always has a special compartment - usually in the front, where they keep Tuxes, Jackets, and Wedding gowns for passengers. No extra charge! Smiley smile Just ask for it.

We are driving for this reason (getting married in our hometown). Obviously, you can't do this but I was also wondering if the hotel where the bridal suite is located with press my dress because I assume whether traveling in a car or plane the dress is going to be wrinkled some. Has anyone else thought about this?

I'll be flying with mine (likely American) and I'm super nervous too. My fiancé keeps assuring me that they'll just hang it in the closet, but I've been on flights where the attendants have said there's no room to hang something, or they don't have a closet. I don't really know what to do...

Mine flew internationally as well, and checking it inside a garment bag inside a suitcase was the best option. Obviously there's the stress factor of them potentially losing your luggage, but these days with airlines overbooking, it's likely that they'd tell you there was no space in the cabin for the dress {especially if it's got any volume from tulle}, and then they might make you put it in the cargo hold anyway. If you're really nervous, I recommend calling the airline to ask, and also calling the shop where you bought your dress to see what they recommend. Chances are, they have a lot of experience with brides flying with their dresses, and they know how the material will behave. Good luck!

What we suggested was plan to get to your destination 2-3 days ahead incase your luggage does get lost than it can be on the next flight out. Do as the other person suggested..garment bag inside of a suitcase and check it to avoid any hassle at the gate bc they aren't obligated to let you bring an oversized dress on board and store in their personal closet. Plus those closets are small and your dress would wrinkle in there too.

Buy a mini steamer! Don't rely on the resort to have one. They're $20 at BB&B and it's the best little gadget! DH and I initially got it for our wedding but we bring it traveling all the time now!

I got the 66 in gown bag from Wally bags and a travel sized steamer for my dress. The travel bag can be folded into thirds but it has foam rollers to prevent creasing and hanger locks so that the dress won't slip down plus a ton of side pockets for accessories and such. It was a little pricey but they sell it at BB&B so you can use a coupon on it!

@Andreahelfer, that is actually not so. It depends on the airline. We are flying jet blue and they do not have a space for my dress. They have advised me to try to test my dress on top of the luggage in the overhead compartment
