Traveling with dress - Recommended steamer?

Laura, on September 25, 2017 at 10:36 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

Hi everyone,

I'm having a destination wedding in Savannah, GA and travelling from Burlington, VT. I will be bringing my dress in a carry-on since I'm so nervous about the thought of it not making it to Savannah with me. I am planning on bringing a steamer with me as well, and wanted to see if anyone has any experiences with steaming clothes or if you have a highly recommended steamer I should look into! I'm thinking no more than $40 for a steamer since I will not use it very often after this, but I'm pretty flexible. We would be steaming my dress and my fiance's suit as well.

Thanks in advance!

I had to travel with my dress as well. I took it to a dry cleaner in my wedding's city on a Thursday morning (for a Saturday wedding) and had it professionally steamed.

I would honestly look into having it done for you there. I have a steamer and I used it on a couple of my girls' dresses and BM dresses I've worn before and it worked well but took forever. I would absolutely pay someone to do this for me instead of doing my own wedding dress.

Alyssachu I haven't because we're staying at an Airbnb. We're eloping with our two closest friends and we're only there for three days.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll try to ask my vendors and see if they have a place they can recommend.

I am doing this too. I have to ask, how are you "carrying it on." From what I understand I can't have it on my lap but don't really want to shove it under the seat or in the over head compartment!

@erica I started a thread about that a few weeks ago, some people said they called the airline a head of time, others said depending how poofy it can lay on top of the over head bags.

Never trust the airlines, they will say one thing over the phone, and something totally different will occur when you actually board the plane. I have also heard that airplanes are trying to cut down on passengers using the closet that the flight attendants use. I am also having a DW, so my plan is to carry it on with me as my carry on, and I'm going to buy a wedding dress travel box. Google it. You get all sorts of options. Amazon even has some that come with acid free paper. You can put it on the overhead bin. As for over or under, sorry, you gotta choose one. You still have it with you on the plane.

And yes.....this is a very important topic for me, so I've already looked at my options. If you do end up getting a travel box, the bridal store can maybe help you pack it? When I pick up my dress, I plan on asking them to help me with it.

I use these steamers all the time....they're actually pretty good. Depends on what brand you use.

I was going to use a hard sided carry on, but I looked up the wedding dress travel box and now I think I'm going to go with that! I much prefer the idea of my dress having its own space and not getting crushed by shoes, other clothes, etc.

So for anyone in a similar situation, I contacted JetBlue since we are flying with them, and their policy is that they do not do anything for wedding attire. They recommend that you ship any attire ahead of time, or you can use a carry on or check it in your luggage. Not quite the helpful response I was hoping for, but pretty much what I expected.

This is my steamer and I'm obsessed! Its amazing. I just brought it to my best friends wedding and we used it for all the bridesmaids dresses and little touch ups for her dress.

They also sell it at bed, bath and beyond which always has coupons!

Hi Laura, which is why I was saying in my earlier post, never put your trust in the airlines. They will not help you at all. Carry the dress with you as your carry onSmiley smile
