Traveling with dress on plane

Kaia, on February 18, 2020 at 10:44 PM Posted in Planning 0 17
Hello, I'm traveling via Southwest airlines to my ceremony. Any tips on how to travel with it, store it, e.t.c? I haven't bought a garment bag yet. It's a polyester evening gown, not a traditional full wedding dress. Thanks

Elopement in late April.

If it’s satin or something that needs to be steamed I’d have someone lined up at the location who can steam it as it will crease. I’d also ask the bridal shop if they can pack it on my carryon for me. To help reduce the chances of that happening.

Not sure if all airlines do this but some you can ask at the gate and they'll put it in a closet for you, my sister did that for her flight to st Thomas

Many airlines will allow you to hang your dress in the captains closet. I would definitely call your airline and see if they offer this service. If not, I would highly suggest finding a way to put it in a carry-on – I would never check my wedding dress! Too many opportunities for it to get lost or damaged.

I would call Southwest and ask. They have super great costumer service and should be able to provide guidance.

I don't believe Southwest has then closets. They are typically only on planes that have a first class section. They are designed for men's sports coats to be hung while sitting in first class.

I'm also flying Southwest with my wedding dress. They don't have closets as far as I know and typically they place it on top of suitcases in the overhead (I would definitely have a garment bag). I will fold mine into a carry on and steam it at my ceremony location.

My friend got married last year and we took Southwest. She had hers in a bag and just folded it and placed in it in the overhead bin. We had a steamer at the Airbnb for the wrinkles.

I don't believe southwest has a closet to hang your dress in? Their flight attendants are super nice 99% of the time so maybe bring them a thank you card with a small gift card or a goodie bag and see if they can help you properly store it? I'd get a thick garment bag too.

Speak with the gate agent and the head flight attendant when you have your dress. They help you. I love SW.
