Traveling with a Wedding Dress on Delta — Tips?

Darby, on February 10, 2021 at 8:19 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 11
My fiancé and I canceled our wedding after COVID caused us to postpone a full year. We are now eloping in a totally private ceremony where our only guests will be photographers and a videographer in the mountains in May! I’m so nervous about flying with my dress. I’ve been researching and everything I see isn’t making much sense to me — I definitely can’t fit my dress into a standard carry on bag and I’m not risking the airline telling me their isn’t room in the first class coat closet and having to check the dress. I’ve looked for extra long vacuum storage bags but I see absolutely nothing that will fit my very long and thick-tulle dress — nothing is long enough. That will almost certainly guarantee I can’t fit the dress in a carryon or in the coat closet if it were even available. What have some of you done? I’m flying Delta and I know they’re really great about this stuff so I shouldn’t be too worried, but I can’t help it of course! Thanks! Smiley smile

Here is an article I found about traveling with a wedding dress! One of the ideas mentioned that I hadn't thought of previously was to actually buy a plane ticket for your dress - if you have the budget for it, buying an extra ticket would guarantee keep the dress in your sight the entire time and in good condition. Otherwise, definitely contact Delta to ask about what they recommend! https://www.brides.com/story/travel-with-wedding-dress

Thanks!! I contacted them already and they weren’t very helpful. I think I might just be really overthinking this whole situation haha. I was hoping someone who recently traveled with their dress would be able to offer tips based on their experience. Appreciate the comment Smiley smile

Buy a seat for your dress. I'm serious, too. I had to buy a train ticket for mine.

Before Covid became widespread, my husband and I were going to do what you did, and take photographs in the mountains of Colorado, so I read articles on it. Experts all wrote that it was best to get a seat for your dress. In first-class that might sting a bit, but it's better than your dress arriving damaged--or not arriving at all.

I have a friend who is a flight attendant for Delta. I asked her about flying with my dress. She said people do it all the time. You can lay it in the overhead space, or you may be able to put it in one of the closets. It will count as your carry on.
We flew the day after the wedding and somehow my garment bag didn’t make it home with me, so I had to put it In a suitcase. So, I can’t give you first hand experience. I’ll see if I can find the message she sent me. (The was precovid, but I’m sure even now using it as your carry on is fine)

    Hiii!

Flight attendant here 😂We always have brides bring dresses and as long as the closets aren't already full, we can definitely hang them! Is your garment bag those foldable ones? Or a long hanging one? Because most of the closets are really short (its the perfect size for those suit jacket garment bags), so they end up getting "folded" on the bottom and usually have other coats and garment bags hung in front or back of them (especially in the winter time) so the train might get squished a little. Personally, I'd just fold it in half and lay it in the overhead bin (we still have middle seats blocked so overhead bins are quite open). I'd rather not take a chance of my train getting crushed! And also, the company just changed the policy on hanging things in the closet (we weren't allowed to hang things or touch customer bags for a long time due to covid) so you might encounter some flight attendants not allowing you to, and if you do, I apologize on behalf of them!! But 99% of us are aokay with hanging things, especially things like wedding dresses!Best of luck❤

Hi! I got married in May 2019 and my very large ball gown with a chapel train traveled with me from Providence, RI to Orlando, FL with a stop in Atlanta on Delta. I found an amazing garment bag on Amazon that even when buckled up still fit in the overhead bin. This isn’t exactly it, but pretty much:

The dress did get a bit crushed but I had planned in advance to have a professional dress steamer come to our venue to do my dress, veils and husband’s tuxedo. Having this reserved made me not worry at all about any wrinkling. I hope you are flying first class or Comfort+ so you have guaranteed bin access!
