Traveling Photographer

What is the etiquette for paying for your photographer to travel to your destination wedding? How much do you pay for? Has anyone ever paid for their photographer and a secondary photographer? I want to know what the standard is before I start having conversations with potential photographers. tenor.gif

Most photographers who travel will simply incorporate that into their fee.

Ours was actually from Toronto, and we paid him and a (local) 2nd shooter $4k. In the end, that's about on par for local costs, so we didn't mind... and we love our photos.

That really depends on what they charge. It’s not so much an etiquette issue, as their business policy issue. Some will have a fee, some not, but they will have it stated in the contract. And make sure you do have a contract!

Traveling photographers will already have a fee structure set up for travel requirements. Typically it is their usual fees, plus the cost of their airline ticket and hotel accommodations. Some also build in a certain amount per day for food.

Your chosen vendors probably have specific requirements/mileage. Especially if their market themselves specifically as a "travel" photographer.

I can tell you how my husband (a videographer who does not market himself as "travelling") does it:

Travel within a 50-mile radius of his home/office location is free.

After that, it's $0.57 per mile.

If travel is more than 2.5 hours one direction, it requires an overnight stay, and the couple is required to pay for one night of accommodations in a "mid-range" hotel (this varies depending on the location - obviously a place like Miami or NYC will be different than Your Hometown, USA - but this language is so no one sticks him in a $35/night roach motel.)

If the travel requires flights, then the cost of roundtrip airfare and luggage fees is required, in addition to accommodations, with a minimum of two nights' accommodation.

If an extended stay is required (more than two nights), the couple is required to pay for any additional nights necessary. This happened with an Indian wedding, because it was a three-day event, so four nights' accommodations.

We actually got engaged in Amsterdam and my partner surprised me by having a photographer there during the proposal, we loved her so much were paying her to travel to Estonia for our wedding. I just messaged her with the dates and the rough hours I was hoping to have her for and she sent me a price including her flights and accommodation and we went ahead from there Smiley smile

I agree that this isn't an etiquette question; it's business. And there is no "standard", so you are far better off just talking to photographers and asking them for quotes. There's no reason not to go to them directly for this information.
