Traveling from usa to Greece

Robyn, on November 21, 2019 at 1:49 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 6

FH and I are eloping in Greece September 2020 and then beginning our Honeymoon. So we're leaving the USA, starting in Santorini and then ending in Athens.

We fly domestic often but neither of us have flown international and have no idea which airline to pick, best time to book, etc. Those of you who have flown from US to Greece, do you have any tips or information? And when you flew, did you do multi-city?

We did multi-city. At the very least, you'll probably have to stop in Athens to get to Santorini. When we travel internationally (fairly regular, i have a sibling in Europe) we almost always just pick the cheapest flight option that works for our timing. Most airlines will do free wine and beer (even in coach/economy) for international flights and since really no airlines are comfortable we don't really have a preference.

If you know what dates you want, you can put a flight alert on Google Flights for certain itineraries and keep an eye on it as they go up and down. Typically I've booked about 3 months ahead of time for international flights.

We've flown to Europe through KLM/Delta.
Their international flights are great. Food selection is good and free booze!

I studied abroad in Greece and we actually flew Air Canada. It was somewhat out of our way (we live in Texas) but I was able to get a round trip for $700. We had a layover in Canada and then another in Munich on the way there. On the way back, we flew out of Athens, had a layover in Canada again and then flew to Houston. The service was great. Also a disclaimer regarding Athens: it's not at all what you imagine. lol It's a pretty run down place. If you're wanting to tour the Acropolis, I say go for it! If you're just looking for a romantic honeymoon, I'd stick with the islands. They're gorgeous!

I can't give advice on Greece specifically, but I flew internationally for the first time last year to London and I was SHOCKED at how long it took to get through customs into England. It ended up taking about three hours after we got off the plane, which caused us to miss our train. Just leave plenty of time!

Oh we're going to Santorini, Mykonos and Syros. We were only planning on spending the last part of the last day in Athens (just long enough to see the Acropolis) so we could catch a flight to head back home the next morning. But I definitely will look into Air Canada.
