What is an acceptable distance to travel for a wedding? Example twenty minutes or two hours etc. There is a venue that I’m very interested in but I’m not sure if it’s too far to ask guests to travel to. What do you all think is the farthest within reason you’d be willing to travel? All of our...

All of our friends/family (with very few out of state exceptions) live within the city and surrounding towns that we live in so by “travel” I mean the for all of the guests already in our general area.
Hope this makes sense.

I say if you like the venue then choose it! I know it's not the same for everyone but I live in Oregon and we have people coming from NY, TX, CO, CA and a few other places.

My wedding venue is is 50 minutes away from the city my 90% of my guests and I live in and I would have tried to find something closer if it wasn't the venue I have been set on since I was 5 years old lol. My guests don't seem to mind but I did make sure all guests are aware by telling them individually and stating it on my wedding website.

It depends on how close I am to the people getting married and how much I want to be there. I traveled from NY to FL for my friends wedding, but that's because I had just moved to NY. Even if we were both living in Orlando, like we were before I moved, it would've still been a couple hours to her wedding close to Tampa

Our wedding is 2 hours away from home. But we have a lot of people flying in from other states anyway. I don't think it will make a difference the people that live near me will prob get a hotel for the night. if they aren't willing to drive 2 hours I don't feel like they care enough about your big day. I've flown to different states for weddings. I understand people have kids and jobs and blah blah but I can't imagine anyone making a big deal about driving an hour. Unless you are having your wedding in the middle of the week at night and those ppl can't get off work the next morning or something.

This is your day! you can have your wedding where ever you want and just provide a hotel option for guests to stay at. So you are being accommodating if it is a couple hours away.

I think if it were much further than an hour, I probably wouldn't travel unless I was in the wedding or it was a very close friend. My sister got married 45 minutes out of town and that didn't stop anyone from coming. You could maybe get away with something a little further away if it's on a weekend and people can drive in the morning or leave in the evening.

I would say about an hour unless I'm extremely close to the bride and/or groom!

It depends who it is and what the circumstance is. I have one friend who lives 10 minutes from me, as does most of her immediate family, but she's planning her wedding for an hour and a half away. While it seemed odd at first, I have a year and a half to plan for it, and I decided it's not a big deal. If it's more than half an hour away I would get a hotel room anyways, and I have friends and family who live that far in the first place. I don't think I would decline a wedding under two hours away unless it was someone I really wasn't close to.

I don’t like traveling more than an hour for a wedding. You have to drive back, and think about a hotel if you’re having a good time. What kind of hotels are there close? A variety of prices? What about taxis and Uber’s? Can people leave their car?

Depends on your guests. Can they afford to stay at that hotel or one close?

My guests all traveled to Vegas. We live in OH and my family is all in OH and his is in CA and AZ. No matter what there would have been travel on one side so we opted for the most fun place we could have a wedding lol.

It all depends on what you want. If there's a venue you love and it's 2 hours away and there are hotels near by then go for it. If you do this make sure it's not a weekday wedding though. My cousin is upset that I'm not coming to their wedding 2 hours away but it's a Thursday and I can't take that much time off work.

We are traveling from Ohio to North Carolina for our wedding. All of our guests minus my Soon to be SIL and her husband/son are in nc, and the best man is traveling with us. We are paying for their accommodations at the venue.

We considered the same when choosing a venue. For most people up to 2 hours is fine and some may choose to make a night of it by finding a hotel room. Do keep that in mind if you do choose a venue that would require travel, make sure there are plenty of options to stay so no one risks driving after having a few or while exhausted from celebrating. The people that truly want to celebrate your happiness will find a way to make it there for you.

I'm from chicago, finace is from colorado. either way people would be traveling so we decided on new orleans. it means that our wedding will be smaller, but it ensures that we will have the people who care for us most by our sides. Memorial weekend next year, wedding on sunday so that travel isn't too difficult for people's work schedules and they are able to make a trip out of it if they want. We are a kid friendly wedding, so families will have time to explore, and we are offering a welcome dinner and a walking tour as well as the wedding, and putting together guides with our favorite places and discounts for different sightseeing options. It's asking a lot for people to travel, however everyone has been very excited so far.

I don't think 1-2 hours is too much to ask, good luck!

Depends on a lot of things. Other commitments, time of year, how close I am to the friend, etc. Mg husband and I traveled 3 hours for a friend’s wedding last year. It was a little annoying because we had to stay in a hotel, but it was worth it. We’re traveling an hour and a half for one in September which is not a big deal at all (we don’t even plan to stay overnight). Though if we had kids or other commitments the answer may be different. So it really just depends on your crowd! I say just ask your VIPs if they’d be willing to travel that far and if they say yes then just go for it.

Get married wherever you want! It is not up to everyone else. I think as long as there are hotels close by, then there really isn't such thing as "too far". People do destination weddings all the time. So if your perfect venue is a little ways away from your home town, that is fine. Just make sure you get a hotel room block for your guests who wish to stay overnight.

I have flown 12 hours for a cousin’s wedding and about 6 for a friend’s wedding. If it’s a destination wedding it can be expected that you will have to travel. I think it all depends on how close you are, how much you want to be there, and whether you see traveling far as an adventure or as an inconvenience.
I personally don’t think there’s any rules or acceptable distances. It all depends on what you want as a couple and how important it is for everyone to be able to go (as opposed to being ok with only your closest family and friends showing up).

I have a friend that is getting married in a beautiful (aka expensive) city 4 hours away. The city has no sentimental value to them. They literally just chose a random city. ALL of their guests live in the same town as them. Now we all have to drive 4 hours away AND find our own hotels, all of which START at $300/night in that town and surrounding areas. Not gonna lie, I am pissed and annoyed. I am spending so much on my own wedding, now I have to factor in at least $500-600 for ONE night for their out-of-town wedding - in addition to a cash gift ($100). I know the gift is not necessary, but yes, it kind of is. I think I'm more annoyed because she said she wasn't going to help her parents (who are not well off) pay for their hotel rooms they are forced to get. She is a good friend, so of course, I'm not going to NOT go. Sorry, rant over! Just saying. However, two hours is reasonable.

I would say anything less than two hours. You also have to look at who you’re inviting. My wedding is going to be 15 minutes for my house and it’s in the center downtown of my city. We’re only inviting family and like 5 friends. I wanted something further but my fiancé and I realized that most of my fiancé’s family is older and can’t travel that far. A lot of them can’t drive in the dark. It’s also harder if you’re having it far away because there might be a lot of people unfamiliar with that area.
