Travel Question

Kelsey, on September 27, 2019 at 11:47 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

So I have been having a lot of my FH's family reaching out to me, him, FFIL and FSIL about when the date is. We are sending STDs once we do engagement pictures, get them back and order them. They are trying to plan their travel arrangements since all them live out of state. Full disclosure I have never booked a flight before, been on flights yes; arranging the booking no. The wedding is still over 11 months away, is it normal to book flights so soon? When I have flown, I know my parents book flights about 6 months out.

That is kind of soon to be honest. unless they know how much it'd typically costs and happen to see a flight that's a great steal but otherwise, that is pretty early to make those arrangements already.

Right that's what I was thinking too. Honestly I don't mind them reaching out and stuff like that. But I'm like geez this seems really soon to be booking a flight. The closest airport which is about 5 mins from our apartment is smaller, so I thought that might be why.

Eh, the most I've ever booked in advance was 3 months. Booking a year in advance really isn't much cheaper in my experience.

No, you’re still in fine shape with your timeline. Maybe they found a sale or something, but there are plenty of airlines that don’t even have their flight schedules out yet that far in advance! And this far out doesn’t typically mean the best deals— there’ll be a lot of price fluctuation between now and your date. I probably typically book flights 3-4 months out. I don’t think I’ve ever bought a flight more than 6 months out.

They may not necessarily be booking flights, but they may need to give very advance notice at work or start saving up (like if your wedding is during a holiday season where prices are typically higher), or they want to start looking into hotels in the area. I know plenty of people who may not book things but definitely start planning everything out a year in advance.

Ok thank you! Thinking back I think my parents would book like around Black Friday because of deals with that for flights at the end of March or beginning of April. Thank you again.

Yes and I know that, actually I just made my hotel block bigger because most of my rooms filled up. So I know most have their rooms booked already. I have no issue with that, but when they specifically ask what the closest airport is, I'm thinking they are looking into flights lol.

Yeah, I haven't traveled much by air. I always thought that it was less expensive if you didn't book so far out. But again haven't flown much. Thank you!

Depends on the person. I try to book our family vaca flight at least 6 months out. my bachlorette party is in march and I will be flying out to Florida to greet my other sister and my mother and flying with my MOH. (she's never seen the beach before) and I've already started looking at flights. hoping by the end of next month I can go ahead and book them and get it out of the way. Then I just have the honeymoon to book after that! Lots of deals already started so sometimes early is a good thing!

Ok that makes sense. Kind of like keeping an eye to see what comes up as far as good deal on pricing goes. That makes sense. I totally get planning ahead, I was actually super excited to expand my hotel block to be honest.

They are probably just excited & want to be prepared. Do you have a wedding website? We set ours up right away. We set up our hotel block 12 months out, listed other hotel options, wedding information, airport information, etc. So if people asked prior to our save the dates going out (10 months in advance), I just sent them the link!

Yes wedding website is up already. Right now we just have 1 hotel room block, that I just expanded today because it only had 3 rooms left and I know my bridal party hasn't booked yet. My FH is off today so he is going to set up another room block at the hotel across the street. My venue is a hotel/ ballroom and there are quite a few hotels in that area. So I figured we will have one more just to be safe. Once he has that one set up I will update the wedding website with that information for the block. I also have the closest airport (5 mins from where we live) and the next closest one which is just over an hour away.

Some people are just super prepared lol. They might also just want to watch flight prices & try to get the best price possible. I think 11 months out is really early to book flights. Your timeline is totally fine & reasonable!

Personally we announced the date even before STDs - I couldn't keep it in lol.

I only have my grandparents (they are big travel buffs so its fine) who are flying in from Florida and they haven't book their flights yet, we are currently 7 months out.

Actually it’s not so weird. The best way to get cheap tickets is to buy ahead and keep checking for good prices. I have bought 2 tickets at different times that would normally be $1000 but since I bought a year ahead it was half the price.

Yeah we have announced the date not like on social media or anything but have communicated when it is. I totally understand now watching the prices, that makes sense to me. I know my FSIL was getting annoyed with people asking her about the travel things, so finally I just said to give them my phone number lol. We are planning on sending STDs by end of October, beginning of November.

Most of my family is out of town so I am probably sending the STDs sometime in October, almost a year out. I am just tired of ppl asking me all the questions about it lol. If they want to book early then go ahead. At least my part is done

It sounds like it’s just general conversation because it is soon to book a flight. Some of my guests didn’t book flights until a month out, we just book our flight to our wedding 2 months out! Lol You can tell them the month, or even the date, people will still enjoy receiving your save the date, and if they forget they won’t have to ask you again! Lol
