Transportation for guests

Sara, on July 2, 2019 at 4:54 PM Posted in Planning 0 12
We’re looking to book transportation for guests from the hotel to our venue and back. It’s about 10 mins away with traffic so not very far. However, with it being downtown parking can sometimes be difficult to find, especially for OOT guests not familiar with the area. I’m pricing out limo companies and some of them are up there, especially for larger limo busses, which would be able to hold more guests. It wouldn’t be impossible for them to make several trips, but it just seems like more stress for myself and my guests. So now that I’m at my wits end I’ve started looking up booking a school bus because they can transport everyone in one trip and it’s about half the price. As much as it doesn’t fit the whole “wedding” thing, it’s a lot more convenient for guests because they won’t have to wait for the limo to make multiple trips and I’m just so tired of planning at this point I’d rather do whatever’s easiest. Has anyone used a school bus for a wedding or been to one where they used one? Just curious. Thanks!

What about uber vouchers? Then people don't have to wait on the bus, you have less chance of motion sickness, etc. Also, if it's a 10 minute drive in traffic, would it then be considered walking distance? Because you may have some people who decide to just walk depending on their shoes

I have went to weddings that used to school buses & it’s fine. Safe travels & no cost to me. I’m using the hotel shuttle between the hotel & venue.

I might be the odd one out, but its not my responsibility to get my guests to and from my wedding. Out of town guests will be renting cars and in town guests have their own cars. Why should I have an extra expense?

Thank you! I’ve never used Uber vouchers but thought of it. For younger guests I can see that working, but for some older folks I can see it being a problem. It’s about a 14 minute walk so not bad, but the wedding is late October so the weather can go either way unfortunately

We are likely doing school buses due to rider capacity, honestly with an open bar and a “party” atmosphere we would rather our guests relax and enjoy knowing they have a safe ride home. In the end they won’t care if it’s a limo or a bus if their drinks are free flowing

Thank you, agreed. However, I’m getting a lot of grief from some people so I decided to look into it. I know how difficult parking can get near my venue and don’t want guests to be stressed out because I’ve been through it before.

I've been to several weddings that used school buses and it was great - everyone fit comfortably. I was also at a wedding that had a shuttle disaster where a large chunk of family almost missed the ceremony because the shuttle didn't come, and we wound up squished on the floor of the bridal limo to make it in time. We're using them because it's the most cost-effective option to fit a large number of people.

I've been to a wedding with a school bus. No one really cared. Providing transportation is a nice perk for guests, so any transportation is good transportation. We are doing our hotel shuttle which will need to make multiple trips. But our venue also has valet parking and is right down the street from the hotel.

Using a school bus is completely fine. Do you have a hotel block? Some hotels have a shuttle service. I second the Uber idea. You could have guest enter your wedding hashtag and get $5-10. It's nice that you want to provide transportation but it's not obligatory.

The last wedding I went to had charter busses running to the venue and back, but I think busses of any kind would be fine. One thing to make sure of (which sounds like it won't be an issue for you due to your location) is that guests have transportation back, and know when a shuttle is leaving. At this last wedding there were supposed to be two shuttle trips from the venue to the hotel, but the road wasn't within eyesight and they didn't announce it, so we didn't see the first one come, and then the second one got stuck in a ditch on the way there and never showed up. We were kind of in the middle of nowhere where there were no Ubers or Lyfts, and we ended up convincing an inebriated groomsmen to let someone sober drive his car to make a couple trips back to the hotel.

A friend of mine got married a few years ago and the ceremony was like 15 minutes away from the reception up a mountain at her parents house. They had 2 school buses to bring everyone up and back. It worked out perfectly!

I agree with this! We’ve decided on transportation for our bridal party and that’s it.
