Train too heavy

Amy, on May 5, 2020 at 7:52 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15
Hey ladies,

I ordered a dress online because I’m impatient since being on lockdown. This dress stole my heart months ago and it went on sale for 600 so I went for it! I love it so much but the train is too long and heavy. I’m not sure if I can get this altered with this type of material and it’s beaded. I’m not sure if they’d be able to shorten it. Any thoughts or similar experiences? I know I need to reach out to a seamstress when they open back up. First pic it was too small lol sent back for a larger size ! A seamstress should be able to shorten it. Very few women are the exact height that dresses come in. There would be like no market if they were only for women over 5'7! It's a beautiful dress and you look gorgeous! The train should be lighter once the dress is shortened.

Before you alter the train, did you try to walk on a tile or wooden floor? Carpet floor makes it harder to walk on.

Thank you!! 🥰 I def would have to have it shortened. What about the train do you think this detail would be hard to shorten the train? Maybe I’ll feel better once I see it bustled but it didn’t come with bustles. Train too heavy 3

My dress had a lot of delicate lace detail all over the dress, including the train. My seamstress had to take off the pieces of lace and then sew them back on. It looked perfect. The details are usually sewn in chunks that can be delicately removed and reapplied. Also, dresses typically don't come with bustles. Those have to be put on by the seamstress as well. I would start doing some research now on seamstresses in your area so that you can reach out whenever restrictions start lifting in your area.

Thank you so much! You’re making me feel better about the alteration process! I’m going to if I can even email and an alterations place, maybe they’ll be open for rough estimates or general suggestions. I do love this dress!!! I didn’t know they didn’t come bustled so I’m relieved to know it wasn’t just this particular one!

No problem! I didn't know about any of it until I went through it! Good luck! Hopefully you'll be able to find someone and get it altered without any hiccups!

Your dress is gorgeous! A good seamstress should certainly be able to shorten the train and possibly reduce the layers if there are any to lighten the load.

So pretty! I think I tried on the exact dress!!!! It not, it was super similar! I love it! Anyway, it can probably be shortened a little. But it is so pretty, if you can suffer through it, I would. It is so pretty the way that it is. When someone hold it up to a bustle, would it be comfortable enough for you to make it through your reception?

From what I can tell from the photos, it looks like the fabric has been beaded directly, and not appliqued. The reason I bring this up is because someone mentioned that the seamstress took off lace pieces and then added them back on. That doesn't look like it would be possible with your gown. However, when there is beautiful design detail like this that can't just be cut and hemmed, the seamstress can take it up through the seam at the waist to shorten it. I can't tell if there's a seam at the waist but there is a seam under the bust that they might be able to use this to do this. I think it's all doable, but it is very complicated and more technical than usual. The cost will also likely be higher for the amount of work involved. Other thing is, in case there isn't a seam at the waist, and your seamstress can't shorten it through the underbust seam, you can ask the seamstress to add a seam there if you don't mind having a visible waist seam. That will likely make it easier to shorten the gown. Honestly, you look so beautiful in this gown and it doesn't look horribly long. Taller shoes would also help, and if at the end of the night you want to take your shoes off and let her gown drag a little, no one will notice! You seriously look great.

My train is also super long and heavy, but I think it will okay once I get it bustled.

Thank you😊😊!!! I appreciate the feedback! I definitely think any alterations to this dress will be more complicated due to the bead work. Maybe once the length is altered I will feel more comfortable with the train. I think having a bustle will help also. I need to find a good seamstress now!

It looks Great! I know that dress, tried it on at BHLDN when it was $2k LOL. $600 is a fabulous deal and it is a beautiful dress. That said, I did find it to be very heavy. Depending on what your wedding is like, you may need to rethink. But for $600....yikes! I want to say just deal with the heavy dress Smiley smile.
