Traditional registry, honeymoon/house fund, or nothing at all?

Amy, on January 13, 2020 at 6:35 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

Hello everyone!

I'm currently struggling with the idea of doing a registry, a honeymoon/house fund, or nothing at all. Between my fiance and I, we have all of the traditional items on a registry that we need. We feel weird making a registry if we only need approximately five things, but we are not so sure about a honeymoon fund either.

So I guess I am wondering what everyone else did? Any and all help is appreciated!

We're doing a traditional registry. While my FH and I are not living together until after the wedding, I've been living on my own for many years now and have everything we need for a house. However, we're going to take this opportunity to upgrade linens and towels and register for a few other things I think we could use (paper shredder, fireproof safe, etc.). If you're truly not needing any more items, I would just forego a registry. In doing so, people will automatically know you'd prefer cash. This route is definitely nicer (and better etiquette) anyway as cash/honeymoon registries take part of the money, either by charging your guests more or by taking it out from your end.

    Hi!

I just went through this with my husband. We had lived together for almost two years by the time we got married, so we had practically everything and didn't feel like we needed a registry. However, we chose to do a smaller scale registry, but when guests/family asked in passing what we would like, we politely said that money would be the most helpful (for honeymoon, home upgrades, etc). Also, some of your older, more traditional guests may not feel as comfortable just giving money, so giving them the option to gift you something helps.

    So for your registry, think:

What in the house needs to be replaced? (old towels, small appliances, cutlery, dishes, vacuum)

Any gift cards you/FH would like? (massages, date nights out)

Any upgrades for the home? (security cameras, other tech)

    Hope this helps! Smiley smile

We created a SoKind registry. Guests can donate to a charity we picked in our name if they wish. Otherwise, we did not ask for gifts or money.

Don't ask for money; it's rude. A honey fund is asking for money.

For us, we're not doing anything. Not having any kind of registry or fund set up.

I just wouldn't register, people will gift cash & that's fine. If you want a bridal shower though, you'll have to make a gift registry.

If you want to upgrade some things you have, make a small registry for just those items. Besides that, guests will assume you want cash, so there is no need to specify a house fund or anything like that. they will just bring cash or checks with them to the shower or wedding!

We have been together 8 years and also needed no traditional wedding gifts. Toasters, towels, blenders etc. We were originally not going to do a registry at all until my MOH insisted on throwing us a shower. She suggested a Stock the Bar shower and it was an absolute blast!

If you don't register at all, people might give you cash but you still might also end up with 10 toasters. All of the monetary donation sites like Honey Fund take a portion of your donations and charge fees.

My fiance and I are going to do a honeymoon fund, since we just purchased a house and are planning a wedding a honeymoon might not be in the cards. We decided whatever we get is what we will use for our little vacation!
