Traditional or classic rock ceremony music?

Brandy, on August 27, 2012 at 8:58 AM Posted in Planning 0 12

I'm torn with the ceremony music. On the one hand I love the traditional ceremony with songs like jesu joy of mans desiring as the processional, and maybe for the pre ceremony music some classical and/or celtic/bagpipe music. On the other hand the idea has been growing for awhile to have the bridal party and me dad walk down the aisle to the song Lady by Styx: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c--qOJ9PJZs I love how it starts off with a piano, and its beautiful and powerful at the chorous (which is when me and my dad would appear). I meet with the dj on tues and I'm so torn!! Thoughts ladies?

Where is your ceremony? If in a church, they may or may not allow non-traditional music so you might want to check with your officiant first. (While I am having a religious ceremony, it is outside and my pastor has no issues with using contemporary songs.) "Lady" is a beautiful song and as I was listening I can certainly see the vision you are going for. Only concern I might see would be that the transition happens at under a minute and a half into the song ... will that be enough time for your bridal party to be down the aisle for your entrance? If so, I think this is a great choice if you do decide going more classic rock.

We are having our ceremony outside at a ranch. The bridal party will be walking down to the Game of Thrones theme (all violins)!

I LOVE Styx!! I thought about this song but it didn't work for me for the ceremony. I don't like lyrics in the processional, but that's just me. Plus, I don't know how appropriate the lyrics are for a relationship with your dad… "Lay down beside me" "Touch me and my troubles will fade"… hmmm….

I walked in to a piano only version of Tiny Dancer by Elton John. My other option was a piano version of Isn't She Lovely by Stevie Wonder. I ended up using that one for the Father/Daughter dance.

I loved walking down to a non-traditional song with lyrics. I kept listening to it in the car before the wedding and when the day came I had the lyrics to focus on going down the aisle and it helped keep from from completely melting into tears Smiley smile I was even (silently) singing along and the lyrics fit so perfectly with how I felt about our relationship that it made the moment for me.

I did go with a slower song, the tempo of the song will effect how quickly people walk down the aisle. But if this songs makes you smile, go for it!

Thanks for the advice all! Yeah, the ceremony is outside Smiley smile I was thinking of the lyrics basically being something Ben would be singing as he watches me walk down the aisle, not something my dad would be singing as he walked me up the aisle Smiley xd Our father daughter dance is Brandy by Looking Glass because he named me after that song, also not because the lyrics fit what he would say to me.

That's true about the tempo...I have a bridal party of six on each side, and I don't want them to feel rushed...I suppose that if all else fails this can be our entry into reception song? I don't know, I love it so I kinda want to use it somehow Smiley xd

Have you checked out Vitamin String Quartet? They rearrange rock songs to string instruments.

I've been to outdoor/secular weddings where people use rock music, usually it's an arrangement without lyrics or the intro, just tweaked by a DJ for length and pace to loop as needed before the lyrics kick in. One of my friends walked to "Bittersweet Symphony" by the Verve. One walked to "Love Song" by Tesla. A lot of classic rock songs have been covered and remixed and rearranged a lot, you could maybe search on Beatport or Itunes or Youtube.

Search YouTube. That is where I found the Game of Thrones all violin cover and I plan on having a few LoZ/Donkey Kong songs played during the reception.

Another plug for VSQ - I like using them while guests are being seated. It sounds like classical / classy piano music, but wait, I know that tune, I'm not sure why it's familiar, sounds like something ---- did I hear that on the radio? OMG - it's Poker Face by Lady Gaga, but it's piano and strings!

The older guests probably wont' be able to 'name that tune', but the 'younger' guests may pick up on it, which is fun.

YouTube is a good source for wierd stuff, but sometimes the quality is sub-par for a wedding. Soundcloud.com sometimes has interesting stuff, but it can take a long time to search. iTunes has lots of covers, but again, lots of searching and you still may not find what you like.

Do you have a DJ? Tell the DJ what you want and have the DJ find it and sample it for your approval ahead of the big day.

I love the idea of classic rock played on traditional wedding instruments such as strings. You could always have The instrumentalist extend or reduce a section to fit the timing. This is a great compromise that lends extreme class and personal style to your day.
