Traditional Makeup vs. Airbrush Makeup??

Lisa, on May 17, 2021 at 9:29 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 29
Does anyone have any advice on which is better: traditional makeup or airbrush makeup? Does one typically hold up better than the other throughout the day? Does one take less time to apply? What are the pros and cons of each? Which one are you choosing for your wedding makeup, and why?

I’ve always had the best luck with airbrush makeup. It lasts longer and remained flawless- especially on oily skin or in humid climates

Good to know! Especially for the humid climates. My ceremony will be outdoors in the middle of summer, so hoping to find something that will last, lol. Do the results from both traditional makeup and airbrush makeup look the same? Or does one look more natural than the other?

Airbrush looks much more flawless and natural on my skin, not cakey and doesn’t settle into lines

I have had the exact opposite with airbrush. I hate it, and for my trial by the time I got home (in humid, 100 degree weather), my face had basically started dripping, I rubbed it, and there were streaks on my face. I went with natural makeup and it was SO much better for me, personally. I would recommend trying airbrush before the big day!

I think it depends on your skin for sure. Everyone is different so if you are up in the air about it, I would suggest a trial to make totally sure!

Personally, air brush did not work for me. I have some acne scarring on my cheeks and the airbrush makeup really made these stand out as opposed to traditional which completely covered them.

Yikes! That's good to know that the end result isn't the same for everyone. Sorry that the airbrush didn't work out when you tried it! I'm definitely planning on a makeup trial, but since I can only do one trial, not sure whether to do airbrush or traditional for the trial.

Airbrush looks exceptional in photographs, but isn't always the best choice for everyone in really life. On a photoshoot set, your makeup has to last a short period of time in front of the camera. for those with oily skin, or in super hot/humid climates, is can not work as well for a long day!

I would do a trial with your makeup artist and ask her opinion based on your skin type/location/set up of the day. She may even be able to do half your face airbrush and half traditional for your trial so you can experience the difference after a few hours.

I would do airbrush for your trial, as traditional will be more like your day to day but more extensive (at least I don’t spend time with foundation contouring, etc). This will give you an idea on if you like the airbrush feeling, and if not, you can go with traditional!

I had never had airbrush makeup before but for my trial my artist suggested we use it based on what I want (I want full coverage and I want it to STAY PUT). My skin has never looked so beautiful and it lasted the entire day. Mind you I was just shopping and running errands, but I really had to scrub it off at the end of the night. My skin tends to be drier, and I do tend to get sweaty. I was assured that it would hold up to sweat.

It depends on your skin type I highly recommend trying both! I have very oily skin so I wanted to try both and the air brush was horrible it came right off my face the traditional one stayed perfectly! But every skin type is different so I would recommend trying out both!

Definitely depends on your skin. My skin is on the oily side, so airbrush worked better for me. My makeup trial was key in determining this!

Definitely planning on doing a trial! However, I can only do one trial, so I'm not sure whether to try airbrush or traditional for the trial. Do you think it would be better to try one over the other? Sorry to hear that airbrush makeup didn't work out as well as you hoped, though glad that the traditional makeup turned out well!

Definitely planning on a trial! Great idea to ask my makeup artist what she recommends for my skin. I also love the idea of asking her to do half of my face with airbrush and the other half with traditional so I can directly compare them! Thank you for the suggestions!!!

I asked the lady doing my makeup and for my fair skin natural look (since I don’t normally wear makeup) she told me go with the traditional way. I definitely glad I did. My pictures still came out very nice.

So best thing is to ask different professionals and see what their opinion is. Or do half and half. I remember mine asking if I wanted to do half and half. I’m taking if you have one who’s been doing makeup on all different skin types they will look and tell you right then and there which is better.

My makeup artist told me that many on-air professionals prefer airbrush given the choice, and there must be a reason for that - under hot studio lights and difficult conditions it is supposed to look flawless. But in terms of how it looks longer-term, or in real life, I don't have any first-hand experience.

I personally was put off after hearing that you cannot use a setting spray with airbrush.

Makeup is a huge hobby of mine and I've tried all sorts of approaches, and in my experience, a good primer, an exceptional foundation that dries down and a setting spray can make your overall look last for 16 hours easily, so I've decided that's what I'm going to do rather than try something I've never tested on such an important day.

Am I allowed to chime in? lol.

My fiancee uses airbrush makeup, I assume this is because of her oily skin

That makes sense! I don't typically wear makeup on a day-to-day basis, so any makeup to me feels way different than normal, but any makeup I've worn in the past (usually just for other weddings, etc) has always been traditional, so airbrush during the trial would be a good idea. Someone else mentioned asking if the makeup artist could do half and half so I can compare them, but if they can't, then I'll probably go with airbrush for the trial. Thank you for all the info!

Awesome!! Glad that airbrush worked out so well for you! I also want my makeup to 100% stay in place all night, and I don't mind having to put in extra effort to remove it at the end of the day, as long as it truly stays in place all day, lol. I'm probably going to ask my makeup artist to do half and half for the trial, so I can directly compare both, but if not, then I'll try out airbrush. Can't wait to see how everything turns out!

Sorry that airbrush didn't work out as well as you hoped, though sounds like everything worked out well with traditional! I'm going to ask my makeup artist if she can do half of my face with airbrush and the other half with traditional for the trial, just so I can compare both. Thank you for your input!
