Torn Between Two Venues

Sarah, on April 16, 2018 at 12:53 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

Wondering advice on how to decide between two equally beautiful wedding venues. We have been stuck on this decision 50/50 and we can't decide either way. Our first option is a cottage wedding - the pros are certainly being married on the lake, beautiful scenery for photographs, the cottage can sleep all immediate family/bridal party, bus transportation offered to guests for safe commute to the hotels 10 mins away, intimate setting and opportunities for different guest experience such as campfire, outdoor dance floor etc. The cons are we are limited to 55 guests seated inside, it's a 3 hour commute for the majority of guests (including us) and we had to push our wedding date to the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Our second option is minutes from our home. The venue is owned by a well respected and known for their food and historic hotel. The venue itself is an industrial building converted beautifully for events on a second floor, with large balcony to the river. They have a beautiful room looking onto the river that is complete redone in exposed brick, wood and industrial feel (also our style). The pros certainly being close to home, we can celebrate with many more loved ones for the same price as the cottage, and they have our original wanted date in September. The cons would be trying to find a place for photos and a ceremony location (as we are not fond of flipping the room over in between the ceremony and the reception).

I have never felt more torn on a decision and wish I felt a gut feeling toward either one. I truly can see us being married and celebrating at either.

Would love some input or feedback!

Thank you,

Were you planning on small guest list? Would venue #2 have more room to accommodate more guests? Of course this day is about you and your FH, but I think guest experience is also a factor to consider.
Could you do a ceremony at a nearby park? That's if you want an outdoor ceremony, of course. That type of site would yield some beautiful pictures after. Guests can head over to the venue while you are doing pictures?
This would let you keep your original date instead of having to worry about all the wedding details the same week as Thanksgiving. Just a thought! Good luck!

Without actually seeing the venues, I would choose number two. It sounds like it would be more convenient for you and your guests, and would be able to accomidate what you want more.

I would ask them (if you haven't already) what they normally do for a ceremony when they have weddings there. Do they have any outdoor space you could use? Is there a park nearby? I'm sure if they have an event coordinator there they are used to hearing these questions and have some answers for you about what people normally do.

What type of wedding do you envision? Which venue suits that style? That’s what I would base my decision on. The smaller, cottage wedding does sound more appealing than a hotel. Also, with the second venue you would still have to find a ceremony and picture location. I would go with the cottage that has everything you want there.

    1) Are there hotels near the cottage for friends/family to stay?

    2) I agree with other people. The venue can probably suggest places to take "first look" photos.

Sounds like you're leaning to option 2 so you don't have to change your date and can invite everyone you want???

If you were initially wanting a small wedding I say go for the cottage, which sounds darling!

But I must admit that the way you are describing the second venue makes it sound stunning. You said it overlooks a river, could you do pictures near the river? And possibly an outdoor ceremony near the river?

#1 sounds amazing, but it seems like you want more people to celebrate with you on your special day. I would go with #2.

Thanks so much for all your feedback everyone! After visiting the cottage and finding out they have a white tent option that we can do on the property to accommodate more guests, we've decided to go with our initial choice and get married at the cottage!
