Erica
Dedicated July 2020

Took my sanity, health, and now job

I don't post on here much but I need some support from all of you who know how hard this all is. Obviously we're all struggling with the unknown and added stress and what that means for those of us with upcoming weddings (mine is supposed to be July but who knows at this point). My poor cousin just decided to postpone or cancel her end of May wedding and I'm heartbroken for her.

So I live in NY and work in Manhattan. My office was refusing to set us up to work from home unless they were absolutely forced to by the government even though it couldn't be a more nonessential business- so irresponsible, don't get me started. I woke up early Sunday with a sore throat and aches and obviously called out sick. (Sidenote: it's nearly impossible to get tested so the reported cases are only the tip of the iceberg). I emailed my office saying that they need to take this more seriously and to set us up to work from home ASAP but I could tell they had no plans to do so.
So I'm home sick (probably with COVID-19) and get an email today from HR that my services are no longer required because they're finally shutting down the office. I honestly saw them pulling this since they've done similar things in the past but I'm at such a loss right now. I'm the main income in our household so this is a major blow. I have no idea when or if I'll be able to get a new job in my field in the future. I know a lot of people are going through this and I'm not alone but I don't even want a wedding anymore. I hope you guys are having better luck than I am!

I am so sorry to hear that you're going through all of this Smiley sad I have an end of May wedding and we haven't decided on cancelling but I am thinking we're at the very least going to have to cancel the actual wedding and just have a small ceremony. I hope that things clear up by July for you!

This is all so unexpected for so many brides, but it's affecting people's jobs and their incomes, which is way bigger. All I can think of is you might be eligible for unemployment as well (not a permanent fix, but something) since your office shut down for COVID19. Either way, wishing warm thoughts and hope for you.

Thank you! I actually tried filing for unemployment earlier but now I'm worried my identity has been compromised as well because it said I already had an account.... I have to call when they open in the morning. Just add it to the list haha

I hope everything works out for you and your wedding. Even if you have to downsize the reception, hopefully you can still marry your person on the planned date!

    Oh, no, I'm so sorry!

Hopefully there's a way you can report to this to the state, as well, because that seems ... at the very least unethical.

My husband is still working in NYC - we don't know why his location is still open (he works at a Famous Coffee Chain in a Poorly Designed Transit Hub) - and it is scaring me EVERY DAY. The restaurant where I work just went into furlough, so I'm going to try Jersey's unemployment website tomorrow...

    You're not alone!

I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. Health wise that is very scary. That is terribly scary that you lost your job.

Oh wow. I'm sorry to hear this, as if wedding planning itself wasn't stressful enough. I believe unemployment is helping everyone with wage loss and or reduces hours, so I would definitely call them.

I personally opened up a second business, as my company has allowed every to work from home but not the same hours. It's making soaps and other bath/body products and has brought in a steady amount of money to fill in the lost wages. I would see if there something you can start selling on FB or Etsy as a temporary side biz.
Regardless, I hope everything works out for you hun, and I hope things get cleared up with unemployment.

Thank you for the support! They're just saying they have reduced workload so I don't think I could fight it, but I know this wouldn't have happened if I had been in this week and if I already had a home set up on my own.

I can't believe your husband's employer is still putting everyone's health at risk for coffee that probably no one is buying right now! I hope they come to their senses sooner than later! I'm sorry about your restaurant. I hope you have better luck with filing for unemployment than I did. I have to wait until next week to file 😑 Good luck with everything! At least we have our guys to support us and Visa versa.

Thank you! I was finally able to log in but now I have to wait until next week to file at this point so I'm stuck feeling a bit helpless at the moment. I'm glad you had a side hustle in place and are able to supplement with, smart thinking!
