Too soon for dress shopping?

Jennifer, on July 15, 2019 at 6:53 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
Hi everyone! I’m super new here! We just got engaged this past Wednesday. We’re so excited we haven’t really started planning yet other than choosing next fall in general. Late September or early to mid October. I do have a general idea of what our wedding will be like and we plan on booking a venue before the end of summer. Everyone tells me it’s too soon to shop for my dress. But my family is coming in from Florida (we’re in NYC) in September. (Just by coincidence) Most likely they won’t have time/money to come back up again before I will need to buy a dress. I really want my mom and sister to be there for at least some shopping even if I don’t find THE dress. Is it crazy to shop this soon? What is the downside to looking this early out? Thanks for the advice everyone!

I bought my dress even earlier than you. People will say your tastes might change but I know myself and what I like so I still love my dress. You will also need a safe way to store it.

I think it's totally fine to start shopping! You'll have more options and time for alterations!

I think it’s more than okay to start shopping, especially if having your mom and sister there is important to you! I’m sure they will be grateful that you wanted them to be with you! Good luck shopping

I don't think it's too soon. Especially because it could take a while to find it and get alterations if needed done.

Starting early is great but I’d caution against getting any alterations done till much closer to the wedding. You never know how your body might change before then and don’t want to spend extra money to change what they would have already done. Just a precaution 😉 Happy shopping!!

Not too soon! You’re a bit over a year away. Feel free to visit a few stores then buy when you fine The One! It can take 6-9 months for a dress to come in (mine took 8), unless you go to David’s because I heard dresses come in sooner.

Start alterations about 6-8 weeks before your wedding.

It’s never too early to go dress shopping. Even if it’s just to go to get an idea of what you actually like since dresses look so much different on you than you think. (For example I thought I would NEVER go with strapless and wanted sleeves. I ended up finding my dream dress which is strapless 🤣)
I think you should go and experience this event with your loved ones (even if you don’t find “the one”)

Ah thank you all sooo much! It’s good to now I’m on the right schedule. I was really worried they’d look at me weird for coming so soon haha. Now I’m excited for dress shopping 😁

I bought my dress almost two years in advanced. It depends on your body. If you tend to fluctuate in size then it might be too early. I personally have been the same clothing size since middle school so I'm not worried about it. Also if you like to keep up with current trends then it might not be right for you. If you get the dress very early make sure to not keep shopping and don't look at it too often. You want to still be excited about it later.

One word of caution: it’s not too early to start looking, but know that the style might not be around later. I started looking right after I got engaged and found an amazing dress. When I went back to buy the dress months later, the style was no longer offered. I ended up finding an even better dress, but it was a little devastating initially. Just something to think about. Good luck!
