Too old for a flower girl?

Chelsea, on October 6, 2019 at 9:32 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21
My fiancé has a much younger half sister who he’s not very close with but his full sister is going to be a bridesmaid. My initial plan was to have her as a flower girl but she’ll be 12 by the time the wedding rolls around. Now I’m thinking she’ll be too old and I’ve already maxed out the bridesmaids so jr. bridesmaid is out of the running. Is 12 too old for a flower girl? What other roles can I give her that will let her be part of the wedding?

I personally feel 12 is a little old to be a flower girl. Maybe you can find a younger flower girl and have FH's half sister walk with her?

Honestly it's your wedding. You can choose to do what youd like. I have three flower girls and two of them will be 10 and 11. At 1st I was worried they might be a bit older and big for flower girls but one person told me "its your wedding, you can do whatever you want." And I am lol my only thing i can see an issue is finding a flower girl dress for someone a bit older but you still shouldn't have an issue. It's truly your decision on what you really want. Good luck! 😊

I'd just her what she prefers, honestly. Also, what do you mean by maxed-out on bridesmaids?

Now that I’ve seen someone have a “flower dude” (grown man with beard that tosses flowers between his legs).... I feel like you can do whatever. It’s your wedding, you do what you want.

Maybe it’s older than the “typical” flower girl, but I think you should do whatever you want. We will have an 11 year old flower girl so I don’t see the problem.

My flower girl will be 21 two weeks after my wedding (her choice of titles). They can be however old you want.

It’s totally up to you! It’s your day. Another idea to include her, would be to carry a sign.

You can have a flower girl but having a jr bridesmaid instead of a flower girl would be too much???

Speaking as somebody with a 9 and 11 year old daughter, I feel like 12 is too old. By that point they are in jr high, may be interested in boys, shaving and starting to get boobs or periods. Sure, you can still call them flower girls, but they really crave to be treated older not younger at that age. It’d mean a lot to be a jr bridesmaid instead of a flower girl. Other than not making them wear a puffy dress and throw flowers, there isn’t a big difference between the roles... but the title may make a difference to them. At least it did to my girls.

To the universe— it doesn’t matter AT ALL. You could have a 1 week old flower girl or a 100 year old flower girl.
To the 12 year old...it might. Ask her and see how she feels. 12 is an odd time— some 12 year olds would be honored, some embarrassed. Depends on the kid— this , they’re old enough to decide for themselves. I’d ask her if she thinks she’s too old to be a flower girl . (Though if she says yes— you’ll want to figure out a back up role. Junior bridesmaid maybe. Or something else)

When I was about that age I was a candle lighter in my cousins wedding. They had two seats of big candles on either side of the arbor area and myself and another girl my age walked down together after the parents and grandparents each lighting the candles and then the bridal party came down. It sorta felt like a made up thing but we still got ready with everyone and it wasn’t “too childish” feeling while still feeling included

You could have her as a flower girl or a junior bridesmaid or she can be a usher to hand out programs.

It's your wedding and you can assign anyone you like however old they are. I personally enjoy attending weddings where there is originality. I attended a wedding once where there was a "Princess"; a preteen honored to serve as a Jr. Bride. It was super cute.

Both of my nieces will be flower girls, one will be 12 and the other will be 7. As long as she's comfortable being a flower girl, I don't think 12 is "too old".

You could always have her be a flower girl but instead of carrying a basket just have her carry one of those flower balls! or have her be a flower girl, I think she'll just be happy to be included!

Older flower girls are fine. Depending on the set up of your wedding, a lot of times I have seen older children and young teens who are seated at the front with family, who step up and take the bride's bouquet ( instead of a MOH holding her own and bride's bouquets, or using a stand.)
Just step forward, take the bouquet, sit with it, and return in when they turn for the recessional. A small honor, something you would not trust to a 3 year old but fine for someone older .
