Too early to look for wedding dress?

Hello! My partner and I are getting married in October 2022, but we are planning to live internationally for at least one year from Summer 2021 to Summer 2022, if not longer. The dates are in the air and largely dependent on the COVID-19 vaccine distribution, immigration policies, and pending visa applications.

My question: Is it too early for me to start looking for a wedding dress this Winter/Spring, which is like 20ish months away from our wedding date?

Or, should I dress shop while I'm living internationally and bring the dress back for our wedding, but then not have my close family/friends be able to go to the fittings with me? I'm not great at doing girly things so I'm not keen on of dress shopping alone or just with my partner, who I trust would tell me what looks good/doesn't look good, but is also not really fashion forward.

I'm also slightly concerned about finding my dress in Spring 2021, putting on some weight, and the dress not fitting anymore come October 2022. I was planning on a dress that wasn't too form fitting anyway, to allow for some weight change, but 20 months is a long time and a lot can happen to my body!

Would love any insight or recommendations - thanks in advance for your help! Smiley heart

20 months is a long time. I know a lot of people who put on weight while living abroad. lol. Your taste might change, bridal fashion might change. And so on.

Depending on how much time you have between you return and the wedding that could be enough time if you are leaning towards getting a pre-owned dress anyway. If you have 3 months before your wedding to buy a dress, there are plenty of options for you, just not the traditional order a new dress in a boutique route. But you can look online for a pre-owned dress, sample sales, consignment stores, etc. I bought my dress 3 months before the wedding because we have a short engagement. I was nervous but found a beautiful dress that is totally me in the second store I went to (they specialize on off-the-rack-dresses).

Depending where you are overseas, you can also buy a dress there and take it back with you.
