Too Early for Save the Dates?

EngagedTeacher, on April 20, 2016 at 1:26 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

My fiance and I have been engaged since September, but just booked a venue this past weekend. I am excited to get started doing SOMETHING even though the wedding isn't for another year and a half (10/8/17). I was thinking save-the-dates because half of our guests will be flying from New Jersey to Arizona. Is it too early for that? When is the best time to let people that have to travel know? Will it look weird to get it so early for the people IN Arizona? Will they forget?

Also, I don't know our colors yet...do the save the dates HAVE to match?

Any advice is welcome Smiley smile

Thank you!

I think it's way too early. Most of our guests are flying in from across the Atlantic and we sent our STD's 9 months out.

Way to early for STDs. More than half my guests are traveling 4+ hours, and we didn't send our until a little under 9 months out- I'd say 9-6 months is perfect.

Way to early! We sent ours out in November, and we only did it that early because its a destination wedding during the summer on a beach and the hotels fill up fast! I would wait until about 9/8 months before the wedding.

I understand what it's like to want to hit the ground running with wedding planning and do SOMETHING. Smiley smile You can certainly start planning! Set a budget. Research venues. Pick those colors so when it's STD time, you'll have a better idea of what kind to go with. Stuff like that. Best of luck!

6-9 months for a DW. And no, you're STDs do not have to match.

As everyone said above, I would wait only because relationships change. It would be terribly awkward to sent a STD to someone now but then have some type of falling out and then you don't want them there in 2017

Waaaay too early. Circulate the date by word of mouth to VIPs only (the close family you KNOW will be invited).

Almost all of our guestlist are coming from out of state, some from overseas. Our STDs are going out 6 months before the date, and only to OOT VIPs.

Everyone had given you solid advice so far. As far as things you can do now:

    - Double and triple check your budget

    - Research your vendors and narrow it down to your top 2 or 3 each

    - If you haven't already, set up and have an engagement shoot (if you want one)

    - Create inspiration boards for colors, decor, and overall style of the wedding

    - Look at STYLES of wedding dresses (actual dresses might change by the time you go to buy)

Too early! We're planning 9-10 months out because we have lots of OOT guests and the wedding is Memorial Day weekend.

Your wedding day is close to mine! I am waiting until after the holidays to send mine. I'm hoping to do fall photos and get them on the STD's. That way there is a solid 10 months to plan. That should be more than enough time for your out-of-state friends to plan. I'm sure they'll know when your wedding is anyway, you'll be telling everyone verbally.

Too early. I would wait until January 2017. Continue booking vendors and starting looking at dresses online.

STDs don't need to match anything.

I think a year is too early BUT you can start designing them if that's what you were going to do! Also, if you want to address things yourself, you can always take some online calligraphy courses and start practicing.

We sent our out exactly a year from the wedding date because we have family flying in from Mexico and Hawaii. If you know who you are inviting and you want to send them out, do it! There's no specific time line to do it. You do your thing Smiley smile

I wouldn't send them any earlier than a year but I think it's completely up to you if they match or not

Too early. No they don't need to match especially since your colors will change 10 times if you're like me lol.
