Too early for Dinner?

Andrea, on June 8, 2019 at 12:34 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 15

We are getting married in early October, ideally we wanted the ceremony to start at 4:00pm and have the reception from 5-9pm, but since we wont be doing a First Look and all the pictures will be taken during the cocktail hour and considering that we are getting married on a garden, we decided to start the ceremony half our earlier (3:30). Do you guys think is too early for the dinner and reception to follow?

5 isn't early if the dinner doesn't start serving right away. Sometimes the dinners don't get served right when the reception starts. For instance mine wouldn't start dinner service til 30-40 min after 6p (start time of my reception). But even if it did start at 5p I think it's ok

It's okay if dinner isn't served right at the start of the reception. 5:30-6 for dinner would be fine. Are you planning to serve appetizers during cocktail hour? If so, dinner can be pushed back a little bit.

Mine is more of a buffet style, and we aren’t getting married until 5pm, but I don’t think that is too early to serve dinner.

No, I'm also getting married in October, the 12th actually. Were doing the ceremony at 4, but considered doing it much earlier. We only decided not to because we wanted more time to set up everything and get ready.

We had a 3-3:30 pm ceremony, cocktail hour 3:30-5, seating until 5:15, dinner served at 5:30 and it worked just fine. But we had very satisfying apps during cocktail hour and an open bar because it was such a long “cocktail hour”.

Assuming your wedding ends at 4 you’ll have an hour of cocktail hour more less that’s already 5 to 5:30 pm. Mine cocktail hour was an hour an a half because I didn’t do a first look either. Guess seated, party entrance and first dances would be ending around 5:45 to 6. That sound reasonable to start dinner. Even if you only do cocktail hour for 1 hour dinner would be around 5:30 which is also ok.

I don't think 5 is too early for dinner. Our guests enter the reception at 6:30, but they sit to a plated salad & bread at the table during our first dance & welcome toast. Then they go to the buffet closer to 7.
