Too cold for an outdoor/indoor reception?

Kali, on May 2, 2021 at 9:51 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10

We are planning an autumn wedding and the best colors will be in late October/early November. The average high is 66 degrees and at sunset it drops to 57 degrees. We have 4 fire pits and are planning on renting some heaters... but would this still be too cold?

What do you mean exactly by outdoor/indoor? Will your reception be indoor? Will people have the ability to go indoor for a good amount of time?

I could easily handle a 30 min ceremony outside followed by a reception inside at these temperatures, but several hours would be a bit chilly for me. I'd be wearing long pants, long sleeves, and a good jacket.

I don't think it's too cold, as long as you give everyone a heads up. As a woman, I might be tempted to wear a formal pantsuit or long dress to cover my legs, but other than that, I would be fine. With space heaters, you'll be more than set. I have eaten dinner outside in 40 degree weather with space heaters and practically overheated. Just make sure you have enough, and depend more on these than the fire pits.

What do you mean by indoor/outdoor? No two people have the same body temperature tolerance so what one person feels is comfy another will feel way too hot or cold. I run hot so I would be miserable with 66 degrees and heaters while someone else might be shivering. If you keep the reception indoors most are fine with a moderate temperature.

I think having the option to hang out outdoors is great, but you need to have room for everyone to be seated indoors too in this kind of weather I think. I personally love that temp and would outside the whole time, but many many people would not be comfortable. So as long as it's optional i think that's great!

I don't think that is too cold at all. Especially since you are having heaters. It actually sounds prefect to me!

I would just kindly tell guests to prepare for colder weather or wear layers just in case! Be sure to say it could likely get colder and they’ll want to wear heavier clothing more than likely for the time of year and length of time the reception would be. Or you could see if there’s an indoor option for the reception if the weather on your wedding date ends up being colder than anticipated! But I don’t see how it would be too cold to be outside if it’s the same as the average weather that time of year

We are renting a house and having the reception partially inside and partially in the yard (people can move freely through the space).

That's the issue I'm having! I'm always cold and my fiancé says that we would be fine without heaters (he also runs hot), so I'm hoping to get some more perspectives. I was thinking of leaving the heaters off, but light the fire pits, during the day/early evening when it's 66. When it drops to the 50's after dark, I was planning to turn on the heaters (housed within the tent). Does this sound like a fair plan? I mean, they can always go inside if they're cold, but if everyone will be chilly, we will move our date back a couple of weeks.

That's a good point. I'm not sure whether everyone can comfortably fit inside the house we will be renting... maybe we should look into an insulated tent?

Do you have seating for everyone in the same area? People require tables and chairs for the entire guest list, even for finger food (it’s impossible to juggle a plate, fork, drink, and purse, and have a free hand)
