Too close for Save the Dates then invites?

STBMrsMartin, on May 14, 2019 at 1:54 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17
Hey there, so my FH and I were engaged in Feb. We have finally booked our photographer who is doing engagement photos for us this weekend. Our wedding is Oct 12th, of this year. Him and I have only ever had selfies or pics family has taken and are very excited to have these pics done, even if for ourselves. We were looking forward to sending out Save the Dates due to having a few family members out of town and to just do it bc it seems like the fun thing to do. I am planning on sending my invitations around August 12th, and have an RSVP for middle of Sept due to my venue needing a head count 3 weeks before the wedding so I want to make sure we have time to get with people we haven't heard from. My question is, because of just finding our photographer, working with his schedule, and my fiancé working full time and going school, its becoming a time restraint. Is sending out Save the Dates in the middle of June too close to the invites going out in August?

It's a little close but that's not terrible. Is there a reason you can't just send them out now?

We wanted a picture of us that isn't just on FB or on our phones. So we are taking pics this weekend and my photographer is going to give me access to them next week so I can use them on the save the dates we are ordering. So yes, we want pics and we haven't ordered them yet.

Here is what it says on Shutterfly- For a local affair, send save the dates 4 months in advance. Follow your save the dates with your formal invitations about 8 weeks before the wedding.

I would maybe just have the design picked out so then you can order them as soon as you get your pics back Smiley smile

I am ordering from Shutterfly Smiley smile I have the ones I want all picked out its just a matter of that picture LOL Since we planned our wedding around huge events in our families we ended up with an earlier date. Just seem to be running out of time. My first photographer cancelled on me bc she was in someones wedding that day and couldn't do mine so we had to rush to find another or it would have already been finished. thank you so much for the help. I guess since its 4 months out it wouldn't be too awfully close. Most everyone knows the date, we just wanted the special save the dates to go out.

I honestly would just save my money at this point instead of spending it on save-the dates. We are date twins (!!!) and my STDs went out Apr 27 which I felt was a couple weeks late. (We were under the same circumstance as you...waiting on our engagement session and for the photos to come back.)

I'm also planning on sending out my invites on Aug 12 and have an RSVP date of Sept 13.

Oh yay!!! Congrats! Sounds like a good day! Smiley smile I knew the invites were going to be ok. I would have loved to have had the save the dates sooner. If I knew someone who could have taken pics for us I'd had done that in a heart beat, but no ones schedule would match up with ours. I was lucky to have found this guy who can get them to me quick. Hopefully I can just pop a pic on them and keep my fingers crossed they come back fast. We may just pass on them TBH. We have had a few people ask us why we haven't sent them yet. It was a photographer thing. Like I said, we have no pics of us together...unless there is a Christmas tree or family in it or of course a million selfies. LOL

I would just save the money and skip save the dates. You can always use one of your engagement photos for invites.

I didn't send out save the dates. They are cute but unless you have a lot of guests who would be needing to make travel arrangements, I think you can skip them. I've gotten them, stuck them on my fridge and forgot until I got the actual invite. I'd just save the money and send out invites. You could print off pictures of you and FH to include in the invitation if you want to share the pictures.

We sent out STDs last week for our wedding on Sept 21 because we only just got engaged 4 weeks ago. I sent them specifically because I have a lot of out of town guests. If you're just doing it for fun, and most of the important people already know the wedding date, I wouldn't sweat it too much either way.

That’s kinda what we want to do, just for fun. About 25% of our 125 is out of town so we would at least like to have them prepared even though our families have already told them the date. I think we will just do it since our heart is set on it! Thank you all for your input. Kelsey congrats!!!

My general philosophy is: If it makes you happy and doesn’t hurt anyone, it’s your wedding, go for it!!

Have you already purchased your STD's? If not, why not just include a photo card with your invitations? Either way, there's not right or wrong time.

For years before Save the Dates, the rule was to give advance info by phone, letter, email, or talking directly, 1-6 months in advance, according to how much time they need. If no one is coming from overseas, with Visas to get and travel reservations, June or July is likely all that is needed. WW and other sites and articles always say an average time that most people allow for STDs. But that is meaningless. They average people where every person needs to arrange airline and lodgings, thus 4-10 months notice, with all of those who have no one further away than a 2 hour drive, who send them out 4 weeks before invitations. So give your info out according to when people need it. If June of July is enough, fine. Or give some notice now by email, with a mention that invitations will be sent in August. . . I know people who wanted to use nice engagement pics who got informal thank you notes they used for shower and before wedding gift thank you notes. And others who simply had postcards made of them, and long after STD's, or instead of any, using email for advance info, they sent them to people when they went on vacation, or tucked them in to cards and letters. Do use the pics. But maybe on some other things like thank you notes, if that 1 month before invitations does not seem enough for your particular guests.
