Toasting with drink on hand v. a round of sparkling (or something)

Morrison, on February 9, 2018 at 6:35 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

Our bartender mentioned it is increasingly common to do toasts w/ drink in hand rather than provide sparkling/champagne for it, and that this is a good way to cut costs and waste. We are otherwise providing an open bar, so I can't see there being a problem here, but does anyone find people are REALLY stuck on tradition for champagne/sparkling for the toasts?

FWIW, most of our guests are not super traditional.

Most weddings I see people use drink in hand. I don’t think champagne toasts are as common anymore.

I think thats fine. Maybe make an announcement a few minutes prior to the toasts so that people can make sure they have a drink for the toast.

We are doing a champagne toast at our wedding- personally I love champagne! They advised one bottle per table (8-10 people) so it isn’t that much for us. We are providing our own alcohol and if we have unopened bottles I’m happy to take it home!

We had an open bar and did our toasts with whatever drink the guests had in their hand. The champagne toast was so much more expensive (and we paid extra to have a champagne greeting upon arrival) and honestly, my husband and I were the only ones guzzling champagne. Everyone else had their preferred drinks.

We aren’t doing champagne I don’t think. If people want it, they can order from the bar.

Yeah, have an announcement. I wasn't ready and didn't have a drink for my friend's wedding toast.

Our wedding coordinator suggested a toast with guests preferred drinks of choice. Her reasoning was that at just about every wedding, about 50%+ of the champagne ends up being dumped out.

I like the idea of the champagne but it’s a personal preference.

Meh. Just have them toast with drink in hand. We’re doing champagne, but only because our drink package offers that complimentary. It wasn’t cheaper to take it off, otherwise we wouldn’t have bothered.
