To Rent or Buy The Suits?

Celine, on July 27, 2019 at 6:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

Hi!

My fiance and I are having a hard time deciding whether the groomsmen/groom should rent or buy their suits. They are willing to buy as long as it's not too expensive.

For the rental option, we have looked at Men's Warehouse as they are about $200 for a full suit rental package, and they currently offer free JOE Custom Express suit for the groom with 6 paid rental packages (we have 6 groomsmen so we would qualify for that).

For buying, the budget would be around $400, and we have been looking at Indochino since they are currently on sale for $299-399 for a custom-made suit. The other option would be to buy from BR, Jcrew, or Zara and have them take it to a tailor to adjust the lengths and everything. But I'm assuming with that alteration cost and buying other things like shoes, shirts, and accessories, it would become quite expensive for each groomsman to spend on.

Our concern with the buying option is the fact that unless they buy a custom-made suit, it will be hard to make sure everyone gets a suit that fits perfectly. Our concern with the renting option is that it's not so good in terms of value and seems like the quality of the rental suits are poorer.

Would you guys prefer buying or renting? And let us know if you had any experience with any of the brands mentioned above (both buying and renting).

Any suggestions/opinions will be greatly appreciated, thank you!

We rented from Men's Warehouse. It was just easier since that included everything down to the socks. There were some hiccups, but all the guys looked great the day of.

Our bridesmen bought theirs from The Groomsman Suit (online) for under $200, including suspenders, and they are gorgeous. They have a try at home program and you can order color swatches in case in online thing scares you.

SIL bought his suit from Indochino and his GM rented theirs from Black Tux (they only rented the jacket & pants, as daughter bought their shirts & ties and they all had black shoes & belts; I think they each paid about $100 for their rentals). In the photos, it's not noticeable that SIL's suit is different from the GM -- they looked great together (all in dark gray). They considered buying, but Indochino was too expensive for the GM, and because of the size differences it would be hard to find them all inexpensive suits to buy.

I'm exploring buying from like a Burlington coat factory on a sale. They have suits under $100 and we will likely only have two groomsmen so it'd be a lot of cheaper than renting for us.

FH bought his suit because he’s only 5’2 and buting a fancy suit was just as cheap as renting(he can wear the young teen sizes) but if the cost of buying was too high he would’ve just rented.
I like the idea of the groom keeping his suit just like the bride keeps her dress but it’s not always an option.

We got the guys pants n vests at Burlington, for the 2 items it was 60 or 70 a person. We didnt want coats but they had all 3 pcs there for pretty cheap. They have different colors n brands also. They also had the button up under shirts in different colors for abt 5 each.

I’m buying my two sons suits because when I checked on how much it was going to cost me to rent them, I almost hit the floor!! I’m buying their suite from Kohl’s. I’m purchasing 2 pants, 2 white shirts, 2 black vest, 2 black jackets, 2 black shoes all for about $100 each. I bought their bow ties from Wal-Mart. At least they can wear them more than one time. Our Best Man is wearing his own black suits.

Lay out the two options for your groomsmen and ask what they’d be comfortable with. My husband did that. The groomsmen ended up choosing to buy (yay!) and the groomsmen (and ultimately our Dads as well) bought through Indochino. We were lucky to have showrooms in our city and near most of the guys. Plus we were going with black suits, who couldn’t reuse a fresh, custom fit black suit? Indochino was great to work with and the guys looked amazing. Much better slim cut suits than renting! There was an easy to use website letting my husband know who had ordered and who was dragging their feet. 😂 There was a mixup on the spelling of my Dad’s name embroidered inside his suit jacket and they took it back and fixed it with no hassle whatsoever. My husband wore a black tux (not from Indochino) and black bow tie and they all looked great together.

If you do use Indochino, don’t forget to google for discount codes. There’s almost always one floating around and that can help get your guys an even better deal if they all enter the codes.

We checked Men's Warehouse and Jos A Banks, and ended up choosing to buy suits from Jos a Banks. We locked in on a great price ($200 for traveler's suit separates), and we're going to buy them all white shirts and ties, and ask them to wear black shoes. We went into this expecting to do rentals, but it was basically the same price to just buy them.

Our GM's bought from Men's Wearhouse because it was about the same price as renting and then they got to keep the suit.
