To pay for a bustle or Diy?

Alma, on November 6, 2018 at 9:42 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6

So far I've spent an arm and a leg on alterations for my wedding dress which included a keyhole made in the back of the dress, and length cut. I paid almost $400 on those two things which to me is ridiculously expensive so I decided not to get my dress bustled at the store (David's Bridal).

While I was getting my dressed pinned for alterations, there was a girl next to me getting her dress pinned for a bustle and I was surprised how sturdy the pins were holding her dress so I thought I'd just bustle the dress myself with safety pins. Has anyone bustled their own dress to save money? My second option is to go to an experienced alteration person that works in a cleaners shop which I know will charge me less than David's Bridal but if I can bustle it myself then I would go that route.

Get quotes from independent tailors for sure! They should be less expensive

I’d look at independent shops. Retail stores will always charge more.

I wouldn't safety pin the dress but there are Youtube videos that are helpful in teaching you how to create your own bustle on your dress for very easy. You just need to buy a hook and eye clip.

I agree with the independent seamstresses. Mine quoted me $15 for bustle but I went in yesterday and she had a difficult time with it, apparently my dress has A LOT of fabric. She worked on it for 30-40 minutes trying different things. So we’ll see if she charges me more.
Also it doesn’t look very nice just pinned up, I’d personally want a nice finished look for my
dress. I don’t know what your dress looks like
but it could wind up being complicated like mine.

I am a seamstress. DON'T RISK THE PINS! A safety pin may be sturdy enough to hold the weight of the dress long enough to make a bustle. However, over the course of your reception, the weight will very likely begin to pull against the pin and leave tears or, even worse, rip the pins clean out and leave a hole. And, if someone steps on it, game over. Check with a local seamstress or alteration shops. Many fabric stores like JoAnn Fabrics either keep a binder of local seamstress or they may have cards/ads posted on community bulletin boards in the shop. Most dresses are very easy to bustle with as little as a single button and a thread loop. So, unless, it's a very complex and large dress, a bustle should only run you about $50-75.
