To hire a Videographer or Not?

Demetria, on February 28, 2017 at 1:25 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

I'm curious how brides feel about hiring a videographer. My FH thinks its pointless considering how much they cost and what we are already paying for our photographer. I'm torn, because I think it's something we could definitely save money on but I don't want to regret not having a wedding video down the line. Is anyone doing something special in place of hiring a professional videographer?

There are huge differences in what a wedding video can be. Yes, a videographer who does a super complex editing project can be very (deservedly) expensive. But if you just want a tape of the ceremony there are many other budget options for you. Think about what you actually want the video for and then decide how fancy of a videographer you need for that goal.

We decided not to do one. They are super duper expensive, the turnaround time is really long, and most people only watch it once.

Not hiring a videographer is said to be the most common regret of past brides!

We compromised and went with a mid range videographer. We asked him to film the ceremony and key parts of the reception. We don't want a short for social media, just a nice video for archival purposes.

We asked our photographer to recommend someone who could do this....he was very helpful. Nice to hire people who like to work together, as well.

    Good luck!!

Here is another form that talked about this! I was really on the fence but after watching some of the videos from local videographers I can't imagine my day without one! I know that there will be things that I miss and this way I can go back and watch the ceremony and toasts etc. Plus this will be something you can show your kids (if you want them) or even nieces/nephews! I know I'll want to show my niece since she will be too little to remember it!

There was absolutely no way I wasn't getting a videographer. I'd rather get one, and possibly watch it once, than not having one at all and living with regret forever. I'm using NST Pictures - they offer cinematic films.

This particular video sold me on getting one:

Also, there are parts of the wedding that you will not be able to see because you'll be pulled in so many different directions, and certain parts of the wedding you and your FH just simply won't be there (i.e., possibly cocktail hour, watching your wedding party walk down the aisle). Also remember the day is going to fly by.

I also want to hear our vows, and our parents speeches - once they are gone, I'll never hear their voices again.

The videographer is one of the most expensive parts of our wedding and I think it'll be worth it. We will have this video forever!

I am so happy we got one. Throughout the wedding and the next day I realized so many moments that I missed. For example, I was the last one to enter the church/walk down the aisle and the first one to leave! And many moments at the reception, because I was pulled in different directions. I want to hear all the speeches again and see all the dancing which I think will be hilarious.

It is a very common "wedding regret" to not have one and wish you did, as others have said. This is something I would rearrange budget for, and as others have said there are varying cost options.

Not quite that same but another budget alternative to capturing the fun of the reception is to find a friend with a go pro and have it passed around at the reception. This could end up with some awesome/hilarious footage.

I'm getting one. I was tempted at first to not get one to save money, but I really think I would regret not having one. I really think it's something I will treasure and watch to remember our day.

Someone mentioned not wanting the video as just a highlight reel for social media and i think that is my FH's biggest thing. I cant wait to show him all these responses so he can see everyone else saying some of the same things I have said.

I think if I can find one in the lower price range of $800-$950 we can fit that in the budget.

The Go-Pro idea is awesome as well.. something to think about. I have even considered searching for a student studying film who may be interested in adding a wedding video to their profile.

I definitely think having something to look back at is special because we will forget or miss such important moments of the day.

Personal preference. I think photography is way more important. I kind of see it as one of those things where if it's in the budget, do it. We got a good deal on the videographer but if we didn't we would have skipped it. I mainly want video to show my future kids lol.

We did not hire a videographer and I regret it to an extent. I feel like there was a lot of details and moments at our wedding that flew by at the blink of an eye that I missed. I wish I had something to look back on. But by the time we even thought about a videographer we were two months out and our budget had hit its limit. Our wedding photos are still a great way of looking back and reminiscing though.

My biggest regret is not hiring one. Hindsight, I would have cancelled other things to make sure to have it.

I originally did not have one. I am so glad we ended up getting one because they caught some of the best moments.

My FMIL had videographer on the list of items she didn't think was worth the money. Her list comes from my fiancés brother had one and they never watch the video. This aligned with my views and my fiancés views. I love looking at pictures and know I'll look through my wedding album. I look through family albums almost all major holidays and have never attempted to watch a family video.

I found one for $100 per hour. He's only doing 2 hours. I just wanted coverage of the ceremony and first dance
