To dj or not to dj

Megan, on May 18, 2020 at 11:17 AM Posted in Planning 0 12
What do you guys think about booking a DJ? I have found that they are really expensive and have a lot of restrictions and can be really expensive. My aunt picked her own playlist and had someone man the sound system she rented and it seemed to be just as fun.

Our DJ will also MC so I thought it was worth it to have someone there to announce any events during the reception. Plus to me it seemed easier to have someone take care of it instead of me having to create the perfect playlist.

Personally, I think a DJ is a must. They not only play music, but they also emcee your reception. Our DJ kept our reception flowing smoothly and also ensured that everyone had a good time. They know the right songs to play at the right time to keep the dance floor full. They are worth the cost, in my opinion.

I think if you've got a crowd that's small and isn't really into dancing and you don't have a schedule of events then it's fine not to have a DJ but i think DJs are kind of useful in setting the vibes and announcing things

Must for a bigger wedding. Also, a GOOD DJ can read a room and know what songs to play next that will do well with the crowd.

DJ or not— I find that whenever someone curates a straight playlist and doesn’t allow any tweaks, it doesn’t do as well. I mean, it’s the couple’s wedding so if they care more about having all of their favorite songs played and less about their guests dancing, then it’s fine to make a playlist. Buuut, I once went to a wedding that did this and there was barely anyone on the dance floor.

As a guest, I always love a good DJ! They are the unsung heroes of wedding days. Personally, we are going with a Live Band, but we also love DJs!

We knew who wanted as our dj and agreed that we would be willing to splurge since he will be the one helping control the flow of events, set the tone, and keep the party going. Ours also does uplighting, monograms, and a few special effects for the first dance.

I’m ngl I went to a wedding with a playlist and it wasn’t that fun. No alcohol was part of it but also the lighting and the atmosphere wasn’t there along with awkward emceeing. I was also skeptical about hiring a dj bc I’m not a huge dancer and didn’t want anything cheesy. I’m so so glad we hired a dj though. The atmosphere and vibe was perfect, people danced the whole time, he could read the crowd to pick the right type and flow of songs, he did a great job with the emcee part of it, and played all our requests. If you want a wedding without dancing that’s different and you don’t need a dj, but if you’re going for a party type of event I think it’s worth every penny.

    I totally agree.
We used a playlist at our DW reception dinner but we had 15 guests and no dancing.

Our DJ is our MC and he's doing our whole wedding from start to finish. My fiance and I both like his personality and his past work. It's extremely important to us that everyone has fun and dances and the DJ feels the vibe of the room and picks songs that people will actually dance too. Smiley smile

Everyone had a different opinion on this I’m sure but a DJ was in our top 3 most important things. This really made our wedding awesome. He was able to get the crowd up and having fun all night. At the end of the day you have to prioritize what’s important for your day.

DJs also MC the wedding, and we found ours to be indispensable. She read the room, kept the party going, but also did our announcements, alerted guests to the first dances, the toasts, the cake cutting...

A good DJ is worth every penny.

Keep looking. A good dj is money well spent with more flexibility and less expense than a band. A good dj can read the crowd to see what they respond to and what they don't, which you can't do with a DIY playlist. A dj will also be able to play songs by original artists how guest are familiar with them as opposed to a band's personal style.
