To Bustle or Not To Bustle

Emly, on May 16, 2019 at 9:38 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
So ok I know I have a lot of time before I need to start alterations but I'm talking with a few seamstresses to get a price idea. My dress (as of now) does not need to be taken in or let out but I would like some buttons added to keep the back more secure. I'm going back and forth as to if I need a bustle or not.. I found a pic on line of my dress on someone else who's had it bustled and I honestly dont like the look of it. My dress only has a small sweep train and I'm not interested in cutting it off and a hand strap is not possible as it is not long enough, the one she has is probably only option. What do you guys think?? Does it look dumb? Do I even need a bustle?

Personally I think the bustle doesn't look good or necessary on that dress. If it were me I would just leave it.

I agree, the train is so small that it doesn’t even need a bustle.

Maybe you could try an under bustle. That's what I am doing. There is a bustle between the lining of the dress and the outer part.

I like it without the bustle because your train is small and elegant.

I agree with this. Your train is small, but it still might get stepped on and could tear. I'd bring it to your seamstress when you're ready for alterations and have her pin it under so that you can see what it looks like and decide then if you like it or not.

Without a train, it's almost guaranteed that your dress will get stepped on and the odds of it tearing are pretty good. If you'll be dancing, any time you turn or twirl, the train is going to circle around your feet and create a tripping hazard. That photo is an over bustle, which I agree, doesn't look awesome (but they are very easy to put in). I also agree with pp about asking your seamstress to create an under bustle. It will be much more subtle (basically, it creates a soft fold near the bottom of your skirt by pulling the train up under the lower back of the dress). It will still be a bustle, but it's a completely different look. Good luck! Smiley heart

I agree with others, I am doing an under-bustle, and you can barely notice that it is bustled at all.

This exactly. You would hate to trip, or have someone else trip. People stepping on your dress is nearly 100% chance without a bustle. There are lots of styles if bustles talk to your seamstress.

The bustle looks fine. The important part is that you don’t trip at your reception or have your train dragging around. For your dress style, that bustle works. Plus no one is really focused on the bustle 🤷🏽‍♀️ So you’ll be fine.
