To burger bar or not burger bar

Megan, on April 26, 2018 at 8:25 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 18
We are getting married in an open barn on a family farm. I'd like to have the food be rustic and saw pins about doing a burger bar but I feel like that is too laid back for a wedding. My dress is formal and then men are in suits. If I went more casual with the attire i would expect more casual food.
Any tips or advice?

I wouldn’t do burgers. BBQ would fit your wedding style.

If your gown is formal, and FH is in a suit, then it may be a bit too casual for it. Burgers are so messy, and a burger bar is going to be even messier.

Given the attire, a burger bar would be a little off. Sounds delicious, but it would need to be taken up a few steps from the typical cookout. So, no potato salad, no baked beans and no chips and dip. Maybe a mac and cheese bar too. Or a mashed potato bar. You would need to do gourmet toppings for the burgers. Bacon, good quality cheeses, avocado or guacamole, perhaps some interesting bbq sauces. I'm sure others would have great suggestions. As for other sides, maybe a summer corn salad. Pinterest has several examples. Also, a nice gourmet green salad would be nice.

My caterer has an option to do a “sliders bar” during cocktail hour- could you do something like that with a formal dinner after?

We had this same issue...so my caterer suggested doing a little of both...
We will be having stations. One will be the "fancier/ traditional " carving area with the traditional sides, one will be an intermediary/ less formal station of chicken with a variety of accompaniments like a mango chutney and fresh tomatoes and mozzarella that people can customize their entree with, and the third will be a much more casual station with sliders and all types of sides and toppings to go with that. My FH loves simpler fare and I am stuck on the formality of a wedding, so this compromise works well for us. Plus, everyone we've told loves the idea of something less traditional. It's definitely eclectic, but then again, so are we 😁

Ummmm, I think a burger bar sounds amazing! I hate eating BBQ when I'm all dressed up but burgers are way less messy!

BBQ at weddings is overdone. I'm never a fan. I love the burger bar idea! Maybe do mini burgers during cocktail hour? Or even at the end of the night/late dinner snack after dancing w/ milkshake shooters?! Can I come?? Smiley xd

I would be all about a burger bar, but I do think it could get messy for your guests.

I love it. Mostly because I love burgers. I agree with pp - having upscale toppings for the burgers would elevate it Smiley smile

I would do BBQ or Southern Style for your wedding. Still laid back, but nicer than burgers.

I think hiring a BBQ style caterer is a better option. It is affordable also.

I don't think your attire weighs heavily on the food since you are having lawn games....that screams more casual. I say go for the burger bar and do some fun sides and different toppings. Maybe do a mashed potato or mac and cheese bar.

So this is what I'm thinking if we go with burgers

Cocktail hour is going to be made by our family as it will be super simple. We have LOTS of drinkers so we're started off carb heavy.

A biscuit savory buffet of homemade biscuits

Buttermilk biscuits, cheese and garlic biscuits, jalapeno biscuits

Topping choices of fresh homemade apple butter, local made butter, local made preserves and honey. Along with ham and turkey slices and mustard.

Sausage gravy that is his grandma's recipe and everyone eats a lot of. His dad has 7 siblings that will be there so this is honoring her.

Considering adding cheese and crackers platter with fruits

Bar services include a variety of beer, wine and mixed drink choices.

    DINNER

    Traditional house salad

Steakburgers from a local grass Fed farm

    Portobello mushroom burger

Toppings that are traditional like typical condiments, bacon, variety of cheeses, fresh veggies like onions, peppers, etc that are marinated and grilled

One of the sides has to be the caterers special fresh cut fries. They are AMAZING! Corn on the cob and fresh veggies

    On fresh Kaiser rolls

Another buffet option of angel hair pasta with garlic and oil sauce or marinara sauce, breaded chicken, and sweet rolls. Can also add the grilled veggies from the bar

    DESSERTS

smores station by the fire pit with Graham crackers, marshmallows, milk and dark chocolates. Vegan marshmallows as well since we have several vegetarians coming.

Hot cocoa instead of tea and coffee out whole family drinks cocoa on both sides!

Cupcakes were designed already in 4 flavors and are amazing.

What do you think? Any edits or changes? I'm open to every suggestion.
