To bake or buy?

Kelly, on March 10, 2020 at 4:10 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 16
I may seem a little out of my mind for this question but hey you never know!
After the money my fh and i have already spent im trying my absolute best to be cautious with money the rest of the planning. I live in ny and i feel like its not very common here to do subtle and diy weddings especially when we booked the venue at a gorgeous elegant spot, but i was wondering has anyone esp in ny made or will be making their own wedding cakes?!

My best friend almost made hers. We don’t live in NY but instead I suggested she just buy store bought ones and decorate it herself then

So did she just buy like a plain baked cake from like a super market and like stack and frost herself?

Haha yes you do seem a little out of your mind Smiley xd Really though, that's a lot of pressure and stress to add to the day(s) before your wedding, I would try really hard to find a reasonable priced baker. THAT SAID... my cousins wife baked her wedding cake (they had a tie-dye theme, the cake was all tie-dye) and it turnout out amazing! If you're super passionate about it, go for it. If not, even Costco cakes are super yummy!

I would double check that your venue even allows this! A lot won’t for liability reasons.

She ended up not doing it but I’ve seen brides on here buy a regular cake that’s already frosted and just decorate it themselves with flowers or whatever else

I agree with PP make sure your venue allows this. My aunt is making my desserts for me, but she is a licensed baker and had to have a certain type of insurance. My venue required us to provide a copy of the license and insurance information.

Unless you have a lot of experience in cake baking/decorating, I would advise not making your own cake. Even if you do have the experience, that's still a big task to take on in the days leading up to your wedding. I make cakes pretty regularly and I considered it at first, but I'm really glad I listened to everyone around me who told me I didn't need the added stress the week of the wedding! I was so busy that week, I would've been burnt out and very stressed trying to also make our wedding cake.

As someone close to their date, I could not imagine adding more to my plate. This is your choice of course, but I would be so worried about things! And also worried that if it all goes wrong I'll be beating myself up. If you feel like you can handle it, go for it. Otherwise I say try to find a store bough solution or an small cutting cake if you want to cut costs.

NotFroofy made ours. However, the stacking is a bit tricky, because unless it is properly supported, the bottom layer can get smushed by the top ones. What she did was to make the layers match, then put each layer on a separate part of a cascading cake stand, something like this.

Honestly, my MOH asked if we wanted her to make ours. 1) our venue won't allow it 2) it would stress me out!

We're doing a grocery store bought cake. Super inexpensive but definitely yummy!

Sucks that people's venue won't allow them mines would! LOL. But I couldn't put that stress on YOURSELF! or anyone really. My sister and mom even said they would cook all the food for the wedding but I can't put them through that. We're just getting everything catered or store bought.

I bake a lot, so I am making my own cake. I am only doing a single tier small cutting cake and making a whole dessert bar because my family isn't big on cake.
