Tips on how to have a well blended multi-cultural wedding

Gabrielle, on January 25, 2014 at 9:11 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

I'm getting married in June. I am white and my fiance is Mexican. His family is from Mexico. I want to make sure that both of our cultures are represented in our wedding. We plan on having an Christian pastor. We either want a Spanish speaking pastor or a English speaking pastor with a translator. We are going to play some Spanish music during the wedding and reception. I'm am trying to find other ways to include his culture. We thought about Mexican food, but he can't think of food that would be fancy enough for a wedding reception. We have also thought of having some Mexican food and some American food (An American food dinner and late night tacos for example). Any advice on how to fuse the cultures would be greatly appreciated.

I think you're making a good start. Those all sound like great ideas. How are the guests split up? Mostly yours? His? Evenly? I think that may affect which type of pastor you select.

I'm persian, and FH is a good ol American boy. For the music portion, we plan on having some contemporary music (Lady Gaga, Beyonce, dance music, etc) but we will be incorporating a lot of persian music as well. From my experience, non-persians LOVE when persian music comes on, and they all start acting like they're belly dancers! It makes for a great party. So, my suggestion: some great hispanic/spanish/mexican songs that will encourage EVERYONE to get up and dance Smiley smile.

I would ask the grooms mother for advice since she would probably know all of the traditions that you could incorporate.

Churro bars are popular, so are mexican wedding cookies, both can be done elegantly, horchata is up and coming on the drink front, and so is sangria in a BIG way, even white sangria (which is pinkish in color truth be told)

Cakes: dulce de leche, tres leches, flan, or rum soaked fruit cakes are all traditional mexican

You can always do mexican O'dearves and a tequila bar Smiley smile followed by an American dinner and dancing. I think, this set up would turn out great

What about a queso fountain and nacho bar doing cocktail hour? I love the idea of a tequila bar too! you could make a sign with your new last name to hang infront of the bar....

    For example...

    Bar Caldwell

I have officiated weddings with a translator beside me -- it works if planned out.
