Tips for bridal consultant

MaryEllen, on May 6, 2022 at 5:12 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6
I went with my daughter to find a wedding gown and had a great experience. She found the perfect dress. She went to pay for it and the screen came up asking what % tip she wanted to leave. There was no option on the screen to decline the tip. She asked me what to do but I didn’t know what to tell her. Is this a new thing?

That's weird. I didn't have that when I got my dress, but I'm not sure if that's a norm. That sounds predatory.

I’ve only heard about that on this App. It was not my experience where I purchased my dress.
I think it’s unprofessional for stores to ask for a tip being that Bridal consultants are paid salaries.

The salon I bought mine from had an option for one. She went above and beyond for me (every handling some family drama with a lot of grace) so we tipped her

When I was a bridal consultant (****), I made minimum wage ($10 an hour since it was a small business). I certainly was not salaried- everyone, including the managers, were hourly employees. That being said, we never asked for tips and were told to decline them if they were offered (which I only had happen twice in 3 years)

A tip should NOT be required. Hopefully, 1% was an option so that would only be $20 on a $2000 dress. Yikes. I worked for a few months in a bridal shop. It’s hard work for minimum wage plus sales commission. I sincerely hope the tip was a little extra for consultants who have it rough, not a way for shops to not offer commission to their employees. Still, a tip at a bridal shop should be optional (and preferably not even on the bill but given as cash if desired).

I honestly like the idea of tipping a consultant particularly if they went out of their way to really help me and were intentional about it. I’ve never been asked before but I think it’s completely appropriate considering the heavy lifting that they have to do to deal with our insecurities and indecisiveness as brides.
