Tips for Alterations?

CaitieC, on July 18, 2017 at 4:26 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 3

My mother is having her alterations done by the same seamstress that I am working with for my wedding dress. However, I have my wedding dress alterations through a package, since I bought my dress through the shop. The seamstress agreed to do my mom's alterations for her dress (not purchased through the shop), on the side, as a freelance job, so the cost is based on the rate the seamstress requested. In this case, should she tip? She was unsure and asked me, and I don't really know either. I would lean towards yes, a set amount rather than a percentage, if she is pleased with the work. What do you guys think?

If she is doing it through the shop and the shop gets a percentage, I would. If she is doing it on the side like in her own home and she gets the full amount, I'd give like an extra $20 or something but I wouldn't think it'd be required.

Does the seamstress work for the shop or independently through the shop? If she's independent it's not necessary since she's getting the full amount of the cost. Although if you feel the service is exceptional then you could tip if you wanted. Tipping is such a personal thing. Honestly I didn't even think to tip my seamstress but then again she owns her shop and did the alterations herself = 100% of the money going to her.
