Tipping!

Danielle, on May 25, 2019 at 5:31 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9
What is the rules on tipping?? All of our vendors own their own business and I heard you’re not suppose to tip if they own? But that seems wrong! How much to tip? For photo and video should I do it the night of or when I get our stuff back?? I’m thinking of doing thank you gift baskets of some of our home town finds (destination wedding) for the people that have done the most for us and we will spend the most time with (photo, video and wedding coordinator for our venue).

I've heard the same thing about tipping the owners... from Gilmore Girls. 🤷‍♀️

I'm assuming some of this has to do with the fact that they set their prices.

If you really want to, you might consider doing it after you get your video and photos back. That way you know you really love the product they produced for you.

My photographer and DJ both own their own business and we’ll be tipping both of them.

I have always disagreed with the whole own the business, no tip thing. I'm sorry. They are providing a service, and if they do an amazing job, they deserve a tip. If you went to a mom and pop restaurant, and the owner served you, would you not tip because they are the owner? No. You would still leave a tip. They work hard to run their business and if they provide excellent service they deserve a tip! Ven though they set their own prices, they still have an office space to rent, bill's to pay, equipment to buy etc. Depending on the vendor, their prices may not yield them a large profit, especially if they are just starting out! Our venue price includes tip for the bar and servers. We are going to be sending our DJ and photographer a tip after the wedding, when we have received the photos, and have had a chance to reflect on the day. We will send them a check with a thank you card. The day of, we are going to be feeding them all day, especially our 2 photographers who will be with us for 10 hours!!

The reason that you do not have to tip owners is that they set their prices. If they do a great job, you should ask them what website you can give them recommendations on.

I agree, anyone there all day should get fed. Many venues offer a nice vendor meal and place to eat.

We plan to tip our vendors but after the fact. I want to see how well things go, and also we will get paid the next week so planned to get our ducks in a row and tip then. As for amounts that will depend on their service which is also why tipping afterward. I also disagree with the own your own business=no tip. Small business owners often have a lower profit margin as they have to pay for everything (unless they are very high priced. Ours aren’t.)

I tipped my photographer, florist, and DJ and two of them own their business.

But they did such an amazing job and went above and beyond. My florist put the more expensive flower in my bouquet than the less expensive one because those didn’t bloom yet and she felt it was unfair. Didn’t charge me extra.

And my photographer was so amazing. He said we were his favorite bridal party he’s photographed, and I’m so excited to see the pictures.

So honestly it’s up to you. If you think they did amazing work, go for it!

Aside from our venue's catering team, we will be tipping vendors who will be with us all day. Our photographer runs her own business and will get a thank you and tip once we get the pictures back. And our DJ will need to bring his own equipment, but we'll supplement any costs he accrues with needing to rent additional items. Our florist isn't delivering and baker only needs to travel 5 minutes to the venue for a quick drop-off. Of course they'll get a thank you and reviews, but I feel like they don't deserve a tip.
