Tipping your seamstress?

Amanda, on June 27, 2018 at 3:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7
Hi all, so the woman who did my dress alterations works out of her Home (she worked for David’s bridal for 30 years). My balance is $394 for alterations. My question is, am I supposed to tip on top of this since she does it out of her Home and if so how much should I tip?

I don't believe so, I've never heard of tipping a seamstress.

Oh wow I have never heard of this. I hope there isn't another person I have to tip now. Following to see what others say.

Okay I’m glad the first two people to reply have made it seem like you don’t tip! I honestly wasn’t for sure as I haven’t had to have anything altered before!

I have never tipped for alterations except for maybe paying cash and just rounding up a few bucks....

I think tips are mainly just for vendors who perform a service on your wedding day...sort of like how you tip at a restaurant because the waiters are running around providing a customized service (they don’t know exactly what they’ll be doing or what I’ll be asking for for the most part), but say if I get a picture framed at hobby lobby I just pay the price of framing because it’s agreed upon beforehand, they don’t have to do the service at a super specific time and date, and the details are all worked out before the bill is rendered...I could be totally wrong, but that’s how I’ve always decided who is getting tips, if they’re putting themselves out on my wedding day for a customized service they get a tip.

I don't think you have to, but I'm sure it's appreciated. My seamstress was absolutely amazing. I bought my dress off the rack and she took it in, add straps, added bra cups, I had a scalloped lace bottom to my dress with a lot of detail and the way the dress was designed she couldn't take it up from the skirt so she had to cut the entire bottom and resew it to hem it make it shorter for me. She doesn't typically take appointments, but she did for me because of the amount of work my dress needed. She would sometimes even stay late for me during the weekend or come in early for me on a Saturday to accommodate my work schedule. All this and she only charged me $190. The price was so low and she did so much for me I did end up tipping her like an extra $60. My seamstress worked out of a shop, but she was the shop owner/only seamstress there. She definitely appreciated the tip and didn't act totally shocked by it, so I'm assuming others tip her. If she does a great job and you can afford to give her a little extra, I would say go for it. I'm sure it would be appreciated even if it's not required.
