Tipping your photographer?

Jennifer, on October 17, 2017 at 7:16 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

Hey WW! We are taking our engagement photos today (YAYY!!) They will being taken by our wedding photographer, she includes an engagement session in her photography packages.

My question: is it customary to tip your photog after the engagement pics or wedding? And if so, how much?

When I get a tip, it's after the wedding.

I have a question that goes along with OP... What with the photographer owns the business. I have heard mixed answers... That if they own the company than tipping isn't necessary? We weren't sure what to do as well with tipping for engagement or wedding picts

Yes I would be interested in tipping the owner. he owns the company and will be my photographer with an assistant do I have to still tip him or just the assistant?

Thanks all! That's kind of what I figured but wanted to make sure I wasn't committing a faux pas if I waited until the wedding to tip.

@Jennifer - I heard and read the same thing...so since my photographer and videographers were the "owners" - I didn't tip them.

FH and I had our e shoot this morning too, we tipped, our photographer not only met us at sunrise, he took extra time to make sure we got all the photos we wanted and made the entire experience really fun. He was verbal about adjusting our position when we needed it and just let us be every now and again so we weren't overwhelmed. We had a travel fee, but gave him extra.

As a note to those who mentioned the owners not needing to be tipped, I believed that at first too, but personally, as owners of the company, they probably deserve to be tipped the most. They put in the hours and yes, set the prices, but they also pay taxes on their own and have to keep their rates competitive so that it brings in interested parties. My rule of thumb is, if they did their job, and you enjoyed working with them, they should be shown gratitude in the form of a tip, though the tip amount is at your discretion.

We tipped after the wedding only, not the e-session. We tipped $100 per photographer (there were 2). I would not tip just the assistant if one of them is the owner. It's really not fair. Tip them both.
