Tipping your florist & when to tip other vendors

Mary, on January 17, 2018 at 1:03 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

I am trying to figure out if it is customary to tip your florist if they are not delivering the flower? The day of the wedding someone will be picking up the flowers and bringing them to where they need to go, so I am just wondering if I should still tip them? I have read in several places that if someone owns their business you do not have to tip. My florist owns her business and has built in a labor charge.

Also when do you tip your photographer, DJ and other vendors? Before or after everything? Logically I would say after so that you know how well they did.

Thank you!! Just want to make sure I am doing things right and not under paying anyone.

I didn't tip my florist. We picked our flowers up the day before.

For all of the other vendors, tip them at or near the end of the night. For a florist, I wouldn't not tip because she owns her business, and the labor charge is what her time is worth to put together your arrangements. I would tip her when you're picking everything up if she's not delivering them.

Do you have a good way to get the tips to the vendors at the end of the evening?

You don't need to tip your florist, whether they own the business or not. I'm sure they've already worked a delivery and set-up fee into your total cost, most do. If anything, you can throw the delivery driver a $20, but this is not a service that requires a 20% tip like waitstaff.

Your band/DJ, photographer, DOC would all be tipped at the end of the night.

Fill normal envelopes with whatever amount of cash you want to tip, write who they are going to (DOC, DJ, etc), and put them in a bag that can be locked in your bridal suite or wherever you're putting any essentials at the venue. Ask them to stop by and see you before they leave, they'll likely know it's for tips.

I waited to tip my vendors until after the wedding. I learned that advice from here and I like it. This way you base your tip on the service provided during your wedding, and you have time to reflect on the appropriate amount and to write them a well-thought out thank you note.

I don't see why it's a thing to tip major vendors who set their own rates. We have no plans to give a gratuity to anyone on our wedding day. Service charges are built in already.

I did not tip my florist, but then again I thought the price she charged was a bit pricey. She only did one Bouquet for me, and she works out of her home, but it was beautiful! Smiley smile

The actual designer who is making your floral arrangements does NOT get anything out of the delivery/set up fee. Unless you are in a very large city the designer only gets paid their hourly rate. The delivery/set up fee is what the owner charges for the designer(s) to be gone from the shop. Designers generally work 10 + hours on JUST the bouquets, plus the meetings, emails and working up the ordering for the supplies and flowers to come in.
