Tipping Vendors

Maddie, on March 29, 2022 at 5:45 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 3

I would love some advice on tipping. We are at an all inclusive venue but some of the outside vendors are business owners, we budgeted for tips but what I am calculating is way over budget by about double. Guest count- 150, 6pm-11pm. Also, how are you tipping the venue staff? Should we just bring checks the day of once we learn their names, or should I reach out to see exact names of people scheduled, we really prefer not to bring cash in this large of an amount, but we can get cash if that is what is expected. thanks in advance Smiley smile

Bartender (2 people)- 20% of alcohol bill, + individually $100 each since we are not doing a tips jar= $1300 between 2 people

Valet (1-2 people, works at venue)- $200 flat rate per person, we have a shuttle from a hotel where maybe 15% of guests are staying.

Caterers/servers (venue in house, I was told 5-7 people on staff for serving and cleanup)- 20%/ each person= $360 each if 5 people

Photographer (owns her own business)- 20% = $300 (6 hours package if that matters)

DJ- 20%

Makeup Artist (owns her own business)- 20%= $120.

DOC (Venue provided)- flat $300? - the venue provides a DOC as a mandatory part of weddings, there was no line by line breakdown. We have will have spoken to her twice by the wedding, once when we met her on our tour of the venue, and a second Zoom call one week out from the wedding to review timeline.

I asked this same question awhile ago. If I tipped everyone 20% it would cost me around $3k in tips! So a lot of our vendors we will probably just give $100-200 to, especially because most of our vendors own their own business. So they’re getting obviously 100% of what we are paying them. If they own their own business and you feel they go above and beyond you can tip if you want but I don’t think you need to tip 20%

We didn't tip percentages to any of these vendors except hair and makeup (for that I did 20%). Our photographer and second shooter each got $100, plus we got our photographer an extra gift for going above and beyond on our engagement photos. Our DJ we tipped $100. Our bartenders each got $150 and we did $50 per server. Our DOC got $200 because she was incredible through the whole process and did way more than we contracted her to do on the day of the wedding.

Yeah I’m not tipping 20% to each vendor either. I’m giving everyone $100
