Tipping Vendors

Vicki, on December 23, 2019 at 7:38 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4
Hello! Just want advice on how to tip my vendors and what the guidelines are.
My florist and my caterer include a 20% gratuity in their price. Should I tip any more?
My wedding is Greek so Greeks throw money during dancing called tips that go to the band/DJ - should I tip the DJ on top of that or is that okay? What should I tip my photographer, videographer, instrument player, matre D? Anyone I’m forgetting?Thank you so much in advance 😁😁😁

I actually had the same question! Online says the typical 10-15% of the bill. One article specifically broke it down:
    Bartenders 10-15% of tab
Wedding Planner: 10-20%Photographer/Videographer: nothing if they own it/ $100-$200 if they work for a companyOfficiant: $50 to $300 depending on civil or religious Ceremony musician: $25 to $50 each DJ: 10-15% of bill Attire alterations: $20-$40Transportation: 15-20%Delivery Staff: $5-$20 per personOther attendants: $1-$2 per guest (ie coat room attendant $100 each)Parking attendants: $1-$2 per carFlorist/Baker: states they don’t expect nor require tipsI found this guideline on WeddingWire.com.If the gratuity is 20% and is included I don’t see the need to do more. I think for your DJ I would do the lower end of thumb and any additional money from the dancing is just a bonus for them.I run into the problem where my bar tab, catering, and wedding planner (provided by my venue) are all at one cost so I don’t know what each individual item costs to tip appropriately. My overall cost is gratuity included as well but for my wedding planner in specific I feel as if she deserves a little more!

Amount of tips are always at your discretion.

Dont forget to tip your wait staff. even if you have a buffet or sit down you should tip the servers as well. i gave each of my wait staff $20 each and my maitre' D $150. bartenders also got $20 each. (i paid for 20% gratuity included in my venue pricing. along with a service charge)

DJ cost me $1400 - i gave him $150 i believe. (i had to make my own playlists for the wedding)

photographer was $1700 for two shooters. i gave $250 tip up front. will give another $50 when i receive my photos.

I paid for decorators to decorate my ceremony site. i gave them $100.

If there is an automatic 20% gratuity for florist and catering that should be enough. Just make sure it is gratuity and not a service charge. 20% is the service industry standard and most servers are happy knowing there is the pre determined gratuity because it ensures they won’t be tipped poorly. I worked large banquets and private events on the Las Vegas strip and automatic gratuities were standard. Also, check if your maitre’d is part of the wait staff or not.

I’d wait until after you get your photos and video before tipping for those services.
