Tipping the makeup & hair stylist?

Mr & Mrs. Freedlund, on December 15, 2016 at 10:44 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Hi ladies, I'm looking into having a makeup artist and hair stylist. Is it customary to give a tip on top of whatever they are charging? Also, how is the tip calculated...10%15%20% of total?

Yes, you should tip your Hair/MUA

I gave about 20% of the total.

Yes it is customary just as it would be if it was a regular hair appointment. She/he is providing a service for you. I would give at least 15% of total

Yes I agree that 20% is appropriate.

Think about it this way - do you tip your hairstylist after they provide you a service at a salon?

So do you tip after the trial too?

@Heather yes, you are paying for a service. Just pretend it's the same as if you were going there to get a cut, color, etc...you should always tip for services provided.

I tipped about 20% for my trials (which was an extra $10 each), and will probably just give $10 extra per girl they do (or suggest that of the girls if they pay...not sure yet if im going to just give them the option, or offer to pay for everyone).

The girls are working for themselves and will get $40-65 per girl as their fee, so an extra $40-50 total isn't bad.

Tip 20% please. As a former waitress, if I received a 10-15% tip I would assume that either they thought the service sucked or they were cheap assholes.

I think the percentage of tipping is based on location. Where I grew up it's proper to start at 20%, but where I currently live it's 15%. Took me awhile to get used to this when I was a waitress. I always tip minimum 20% because I feel like that is appropriate, but people where I live would disagree with me and say 15%

Yeah sorry, @April, 15% is still cheap. Being surrounded by cheap people doesn't make cheap okay.

I agree that it is cheap. That's why I said I don't tip any less than 20%
