Tipping the Catering and Service Staff

Mumsie, on October 31, 2019 at 5:06 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

The buffet dinner is being catered on-site at the wedding and reception venue. A 15% service charge has been added to the catering portion of the contract. Is an additional amount (tip) expected and how much? I have read that tipping should be for servers who give outstanding service. What was your experience?

A service charge is not a tip 99% of the time, but you can ask your caterer to clarify if the contract isn't specific. If that's the case, yes, you should tip.

Grr. The time to ask is BEFORE you sign the contract. At this point, of course they are going to say not a tip. Unless you are in a state like NY that mandates that service fees be paid to servers.

I would just ask the venue. One of my daughters had a service fee and it was the tip. She still tipped the Coordinator above and beyond because the lady was amazing.

We had a service fee that did not include tip, so definitely ask. If it does, I’d probably still bring some cash to give out day of to supplement

If a % of gratituity has already been added to your bill then personally i wouldnt tip more.
At our venue an 18% gratituity tip is already added to our bill. We wont be tipping more then that

We have a service charge and it was emphasized in the contract that it wasn’t a tip. You should ask what the service charge pays for.

I asked my caterer about this probably four times just to be sure. Everything I had read on here and otherwise had said the service fee is not a tip. I was caught off guard when our caterer told me it was on her contract. I would just double check with your venue/caterer to make sure.
