Tipping seamstress?

Jaclyn, on September 7, 2018 at 1:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7
I am seeing mixed things on whether or not to tip your seamstress. She works for the bridal boutique where I got my dress from if that makes a difference. I just don’t want to be rude when I see her tonight!

I have never heard of this. Typically, you are paying fees to have this done. If the tailoring is included in the cost of your gown, then I don't see a need to tip. Maybe confirm with the owner of the boutique as she may actually not be keen on you tipping.

I did tip mine. She did an awesome job and was also willing to come in early/stay late so she could spend extra time with me going over everything when she wasn't as busy with customers coming in and out. Her price was also super cheap, way less than I had budgeted to spend. I could not have been happier with how my dress came out (I bought my dress off the rack and needed a lot of alterations: taken in, straps added, bra cups sewn in, bustled, and hemmed with a very detailed lace bottom). If it had been more of a standard service, I probably wouldn't have. I'm sure they would appreciate a tip, so if you can, I would say go for it, but I don't think you should feel obligated.

I didn’t even think of this, I probably wouldn’t tip her, since her prices are in with the alterations. I don’t think it is normally expected but it is nice to do!

My mom and I were just discussing this as I go for my final fitting on Tuesday. My seamstress does alterations as a side business out of her home (but, came very highly recommended). I was quoted $250 (to start) by the bridal shop where I purchased but, the seamstress we went with agreed to do it all for $80. We definitely think she deserves a tip and will probably give her $120.

I think it would be a nice gesture and generally tip service people at least 20%.

I went to a private seamstress for my MOB dress. She did a fantastic job and was less than I expected so I tipped her. She seemed really surprised and asked if I was sure. I got the impression that she doesn’t usually get tips, but still felt she deserved one.

    Hi there, Jaclyn!

I think this is really something that's completely up to you!! I've never tipped seamstresses in the past but I've also never been fitted for a wedding dress! What did you end up deciding to do?!

I think it depends on the etiquette of your specific bridal salon. If it was an independent person, like some of the others have stated theirs were, then I'd say go for it if you want to. But some salons might not allow or frown upon this Smiley smile

I had mine done at Davids Bridal and she told me they didn't accept tips.
